Vegetable oil ingredient key to destroying gastric disease bacteria
(University of California - San Diego) The bacterium Helicobacter pylori is strongly associated with gastric ulcers and cancer. To combat the infection, researchers at University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and Jacobs School of Engineering developed LipoLLA, a therapeutic nanoparticle that contains linolenic acid, a component in vegetable oils. In mice, LipoLLA was safe and more effective against H. pylori infection than standard antibiotic treatments. (Source: EurekAlert! - Cancer)

Botox may be useful in treating stomach cancers
ConclusionThese laboratory experiments show that nerves have a role in the development and advancement of stomach cancer. The early experiments in mice found that stopping the nervous supply by either cutting the vagus nerve or injecting it with Botox improved survival rates and reduced cancer growth. The Botox injections were not performed on any humans in this study. However, an early-phase clinical trial in humans with inoperable stomach cancer began in Norway in January 2013, with the results expected in 2016. This will determine the safety of such a procedure and work out the number of people who would need to be treat...

Common antibiotic linked to 'tiny' rise in heart deaths
Conclusion The conclusion that the risk of cardiac death during the use of clarithromycin is 76% higher than that for penicillin V was based on a small number of cardiac deaths. In fact, it occurred during 0.01% of prescriptions of clarithromycin, compared with 0.005% during prescriptions for penicillin V. A death rate just a bit higher than a very small death rate is still very small. This means that from an individual point of view, the risk of cardiac death from taking either antibiotic is minimal. This study does not prove clarithromycin caused any cardiac deaths. It only showed a very small increased risk of card...

Exploiting gastric vulnerability
(PLOS) Helicobacter pylori infection promotes stomach ulcers and cancer. How H. pylori initially interacts with and irritates gastric tissue is not well understood. An article published on July 17 in PLOS Pathogens now describes that H. pylori rapidly identifies and colonizes sites of minor injuries in the stomach, almost immediately interferes with healing at those injury sites, and so promotes sustained gastric damage.
