Impact of Emergency Department Safety Planning on 30-Day Mental Health Service Use
CONCLUSIONS: Safety planning was associated with fewer subsequent ED and inpatient admissions among patients treated in the ED for suicidal behavior. The authors recommend that safety planning be universally implemented in EDs and included in routine outpatient care.PMID:38532689 | DOI:10.1176/appi.ps.20230187 (Source: Psychiatric Services)

Effect of smoking cessation on psoriasis vulgaris, palmoplantar pustulosis, and generalized pustular psoriasis
CONCLUSIONS: Compared with continuous smoking, smoking cessation was associated with a decreased risk of developing psoriasis. The risk-reducing effect of smoking cessation was more pronounced in those maintaining a smoke-free status. Smoking cessation and the maintenance of a smoke-free status should be encouraged to prevent the development of psoriasis and all other smoking-related diseases.PMID:38534203 | DOI:10.1093/bjd/ljae130 (Source: The British Journal of Dermatology)

Combining SSRIs With Oral Anticoagulants Found to Increase Risk of Major Bleeding
People who take serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and oral anticoagulants have an increased risk of multiple types of major bleeding compared with people who take only oral anticoagulants, astudy inJAMA Network Open has found. The study findings also showed that bleeding risk differs depending on the type of anticoagulant.Christel Renoux, M.D., Ph.D., of Jewish General Hospital in Montreal and colleagues examined data from 331,305 patients in the United Kingdom aged 60 years or older who had atrial fibrillation and began taking oral anticoagulants between January 2, 1998, and March 29, 2021. The researchers included an...

Increased Risk of Incident Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Related Hospitalizations in Tuberculosis Survivors: A Population-Based Matched Cohort Study
CONCLUSION: TB survivors had higher risks of incident COPD and COPD-related hospitalization compared to controls. These results suggest that previous TB is an important COPD etiology associated with COPD-related hospitalization.PMID:38529575 | DOI:10.3346/jkms.2024.39.e105 (Source: J Korean Med Sci)

COVID-19 Outcome and Tobacco Product Use: Case-Control and Retrospective Cohort Studies Using Nationwide Samples
CONCLUSION: Current CC smokers and current users of any tobacco product showed reduced risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19-related hospitalization. It remains uncertain whether these relationships are causal.PMID:38529574 | DOI:10.3346/jkms.2024.39.e103 (Source: J Korean Med Sci)

Evaluation of Elastic Venous Compression Device dispensation in pregnant and post-partum women using the French National Health Insurance Claims Database: The ProFIL retrospective cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: Low observed dispensation rates highlight a discrepancy between the French National Authority for Health (Haute Autorité de Santé, HAS), recommending EVCDs use during pregnancy and after delivery, and the real-life use of EVCD. Prescription sensitization combined with targeted information campaigns for pregnant women would be beneficial to contribute to the prevention of VTE, a health problem for pregnant women.PMID:38531180 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejogrb.2024.03.014 (Source: Reproductive Biology)

Status of mental and social activities of young and middle-aged patients after papillary thyroid cancer surgery
ConclusionYoung and middle-aged patients with PTC commonly experience a range of health-related issues and disease-specific symptoms following surgery, accompanied by inferior psychological well-being, HRQoL, and work readiness. It is crucial to prioritize timely interventions targeting postoperative psychological support, HRQoL improvement, and the restoration of working ability in PTC patients. Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1281: Patient-Relevant Costs for Organ Preservation versus Radical Resection in Locally Advanced Rectal Cancer
ay Alexander Fabian Klaus Pietschmann Total neoadjuvant therapy (TNT) is an evolving treatment schedule for locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC), allowing for organ preservation in a relevant number of patients in the case of complete response. Patients who undergo this so-called “watch and wait” approach are likely to benefit regarding their quality of life (QoL), especially if definitive ostomy could be avoided. In this work, we performed the first cost-effectiveness analysis from the patient perspective to compare costs for TNT with radical resection after neoadjuvant chemoradiation ...
