Reserve after HPSP Active Duty Commitment (Air Force)
OK I know what some of you are thinking. Dr. DLoNB, why in the world would you willingly stay in the military after being handed the golden key to your HPSP active duty chastity belt? The allure of cheap health insurance, being able to transfer my GI bill, and salving my HPSP time towards a retirement pension is enticing me. From what I can tell, it's just a weekend per month and maybe 2 weeks a year of active duty time. The retirement pay is not insignificant and could be a huge part of... Salary Votes
Not a new grad by a long shot…Is 270K base plus a 30K guaranteed biannual bonus desirable compensation for a 30hrs/wk ER psych gig? Offered by an academic group and set in a county facility. High COL west coast metropolis, but gig is in a neighboring low COL, less populous county…less desirable for living (35 min drive). A few mind yous: The health insurance is basically useless. This means an added out-of-pocket cost (at least $1200/month). They haven’t disclosed compensation formulas... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Would it look bad on a resume to quit a full time job at CVS if you immediately start multiple PRN hospital positions?
So I work at CVS and hate the current situation I'm in at my store. Would it look bad on my resume to quit CVS and start multiple (2-3) PRN hospital positions? Yes, I'm aware they would not come with health insurance and benefits. There aren't any good full time options open right now. I am open to purchasing my own health insurance and I am good with budgeting so I am okay with a lower income for a time. I just don't want my resume to look bad based on how competitive the market is right... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Full-time job and full-time post-bacc or quit and find part-time work?
In June, I quit my full-time job with the intention of getting part-time jobs in clinical research and scribing. However, shortly after I quit I was offered a full-time job in my original field (software engineering) and accepted it because the company is pretty chill and I should be able to balance the full-time work schedule with full-time school schedule. Also I live in NYC and having a decent paycheck and health insurance is very helpful. However, I'm quickly realizing that apart from... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

1099 income, ballpark on taxes
Trying to figure out about how much I’d take home with a 1099 gig in florida. Could y’all help me? 500k 1099 income per year I’d have to pay: Health insurance (approx 25k per year) Malpractice (approx 35k per year?) 401k (66k per year) Figure these items are deductible and lower my taxable income to approx 374,000. Then I’m plugging this into an online tax calculator and putting 374k in as my 1099 income, my tax liability is about 105k. Is this about right? thanks! I toss around the idea... Experiences with and opinions of Reimbursify
Insurance Reimbursement Software | Reimbursify - Reimbursify Reimbursify software simplifies out-of-network insurance reimbursement for practitioners and patients. Health insurance is hard. Reimbursify Makes it Easy. reimbursify.com This is an interesting idea for those of us out of network. But it also seems like it would add more daily work/hassle for a service that none of my patients have asked for or know exists. I am curious to hear others experiences. Thank you. 1099 and Health Insurance
I was wondering what people typically do who are 1099 only in terms of health insurance. Best to find a plan on the marketplace or any other better options? Thanks! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Leveraging an offer
The details (with a few minor changes to hide my identity): 1.5 years licensed 1.5 years at a group PP, therapy only and a specialized DEI role that requires 0-2 hours per week Fee for service split is 55% which I know is traditionally low, but I have full admin support and I do get a stipend for health insurance and 401k addition. I thought this was good at the time but now I'm not so sure? Last year I pulled about $115K (including a bonus) but live in a *very* high COL area... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Just need to vent
I am lucky to be working in an upscale neighborhood but the pay is not upscale. 30% of collections but they cover malpractice and 50% of health insurance. Everywhere has tip jars so I figured why the hell not and put a tip jar at the front desk for me and the medical assistant to split. It was collecting about $30-40 a day and then the boss found out. He started to take the jar and then only gave me 30% of it. I told him these are gifts and I have 3 kids to feed this is BS, these are... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

CCOM vs UQ-Ochsner
Hello! I’m deciding between CCOM and UQ-Ochsner for med school. Stats: 510 MCAT, 3.4 undergrad GPA, 3.79 grad GPA (MPH). I’m interested in general surgery, plastics, otolaryngology, derm, and ob gyn, but plan to go in with an open mind in regard to specialty. I want to eventually work in the field of global health (either as a physician consultant for an NGO or just volunteer abroad). Tuition for CCOM is 78k, UQ-O is 68k plus health insurance and travel. CCOM Pros Remain in same... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Unexpected time off--what to do?
Hello, all-- I'm a long-time SDN user, but created a throwaway as there are personal details here. I'm an early career psychiatrist. Employed for 3 years, then this year (after getting married, feeling good about savings, securing health insurance, and feeling more secure with my partner's income), took the leap to start a small cash-pay PP. I got a part-time job as a medical director for an IOP (1099) which paid well and made me less nervous about the finances. Several weeks ago, I was... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Advice needed: starting work as 1099, what do I need to do?
Hey folks, I just signed onto a new gig working as an independent contractor at a new hospital. I have ZERO experience with this. For those that have gone through it, what advice do you have on how to start? Do I need to immediately find a financial advisor or a CPA or can this wait? I'm planning on starting an LLC. Do this myself or hire a professional? Do I open a business account? Look for health insurance? Man, I feel like I'm in over my head, any bits of advice or wisdom you have...
