UNISON calls for action to tackle stress endemic in public services
UNISON is stepping up its campaign on stress after a survey of 10,000 members showed that it is the top health and safety concern for union members. Some three-quarters of members said they had never been surveyed by their employer on stress – and 61% said their employer had never spoken to them the issue at all. The biggest cause of stress, say UNISON members, is excessive demands placed on them by staff shortages, cuts and constant change. And 87% of the almost 10,000 who answered said that increasing pressure on staff, and the stress that brings, means that services to the public suffer. UNISON is calling on its branc...

UNISON welcomes HSE report on needlesticks
UNISON has welcomed a report from the Health and Safety Executive on its inspection campaign on the prevention and management of injuries from sharps (needlesticks) in NHS organisations. UNISON and the Safer Needles Network has been pushing for this as a way of re-enforcing the sharps regulations that UNISON had successfully campaigned for. The chief findings of the report were that: health and safety breaches were identified in 90% of organisations visited; 83% failed to fully comply with the sharps regulations; improvement notices were issued to 45% of the organisations that were visited. UNISON assistant national ...

♡ UNISON: it’s a life saver
Health and safety saves lives, and UNISON reps are at the forefront of that work. That was the clear message from the union’s first Safety Rep of the Year awards held in London this week. Tom McWilliams from Scotland got involved in health and safety after a friend died in an explosion at work. Recently, he and colleagues noticed an increase in illness at work. As a UNISON safety rep, he organised an inspection which led to the discovery of carbon monoxide leaking into a work area and slowly poisoning staff. Carbon monoxide is a colourless and odourless gas. Exposure leads to hundreds of hospital admissions and up to...

Night shifts 'linked to increased breast cancer risk'
Conclusion This study in mice appears to support previous research suggesting a link between night-shift work and breast cancer. It looked at an inverted pattern of light and dark to assess whether this is linked to greater risk. The researchers found mice exposed to weekly light-dark inversions saw a larger increase in body weight and quicker tumour development. One limitation with this study is it is an animal study, which reduces the generalisability of findings. However, as there are a number of studies that have drawn similar conclusions – some in humans – these findings do add to the research in this area. Shif...
