Changes in retinal nerve fiber layer thickness may be the cause of post-COVID-19 headaches
CONCLUSION: In this study, a correlation between headache and changes in RNLF after COVID-19 infection was found. It may have wider ramifications to look into the COVID-19-associated headache phenotype of people with a history of migraines, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of migraine pathogenesis. This relationship can provide further insight into this infection.PMID:38625389 | DOI:10.1080/01616412.2024.2340875 (Source: Neurological Research)

Acute Treatment Patterns, Migraine Burden, and Healthcare Resource Use in People With Migraine: Results From the OVERCOME (EU) Observational Study
CONCLUSION: High migraine-related burden levels were reported, despite use of acute medication. Although triptans are recommended for moderate to severe migraine attacks in Spanish and German guidelines, less than half of participants were using triptans; treatment satisfaction in those using triptans was generally poor. New tailored treatment options may help address unmet needs in current acute treatment.PMID:38625512 | DOI:10.1007/s40122-024-00589-3 (Source: Pain Physician)

Efficacy and safety of antibiotics for treatment of leptospirosis: a systematic review and network meta-analysis
ConclusionsFindings recommend that leptospirosis patients be treated with antibiotics, which significantly reduced the leptospirosis defervescence time. Cephalosporins, doxycycline, and penicillin are suggested, and azithromycin may be a suitable alternative for drug-resistant cases.Systematic review registrationPROSPERO CRD42022354938. Effectiveness and safety of manual therapy when compared with oral pain medications in patients with neck pain: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsMT may be more effective for people with neck pain in both short and long-term with a better safety profile regarding adverse events when compared to patients receiving oral pain medications. However, we advise caution when interpreting our safety results due to the different level of reporting strategies in place for MT and medication-induced adverse events. Future MT trials should create and adhere to strict reporting strategies with regards to adverse events to help gain a better understanding on the nature of potential MT-induced adverse events and to ensure patient safety.Trial registrationPROSPERO registra...

Non-targeted serial epidural blood patching for the treatment of intracranial hypotension headache during late pregnancy: a case report
Intracranial hypotension can cause debilitating headaches, commonly due to the leakage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) through a spinal dural defect or a CSF-venous fistula.1 It can also occur spontaneously, at an estimated annual rate of 5 per 100 000.2 Although the most common presentation is orthostatic headaches,3 the symptoms can be non-specific and include nausea, neck stiffness, blurred vision, and various neurological deficits,1,4 sharing similarities with those of migraine.5 Therefore, the diagnosis of intracranial hypotension can be challenging and is often missed or delayed. Put on Your Thinking Cap: A Fungating Scalp Mass
A 66-year-old farmer with a medical history significant for multiple squamous cell carcinomas and basal cell carcinomas presented with a large posterior scalp mass of 6-month duration (fig 1). His symptoms included headaches alone with no focal neurologic deficits. The patient continues to smoke half a pack per day with 20 pack-years. On examination, a large fixed fungating scalp mass with ulcerations was present with no palpable cervical lymphadenopathy. Magnetic resonance imaging of the head showed a 8.2- × 6.1-cm enhancing invasive scalp soft tissue mass lesion with extension through the bilateral parietal calvarium (f...

Daprodustat: A Hypoxia-Inducible Factor-Prolyl Hydroxylase Inhibitor for Anemia of Chronic Kidney Disease
CONCLUSIONS: Daprodustat is a novel oral, non-iron therapy for treatment of anemia of CKD. It was Food and Drug Administration approved in 2023 in patients already receiving dialysis for at least 4 months but not in non-dialysis patients. Long-term data for safety and additional benefits are pending.PMID:38616529 | DOI:10.1177/10600280241241563 (Source: The Annals of Pharmacotherapy)
