MedEssist is Helping to Transform Pharmacies into Pharmacy Health Clinics
The healthcare system in many countries is stretched thin. To help relieve the pressure, governments are starting to allow pharmacists to treat a growing number of minor ailments. MedEssist’s technology platform is helping pharmacies transform into health clinics. Healthcare IT Today got a brief demonstration of the MedEssist platform from Joella Almeida, CEO and Co-Founder at the Collision Conference. We also asked her about the expanding role of pharmacists in healthcare. Pharmacies Are Already in the Community “We are focused on helping independent pharmacies,” explained Almeida. “There’s one on every bloc...

Reducing Viral Spread in Schools: France Makes Proactive Move to Measure and Reduce CO2 Levels in School and Daycare
One of my favorite gadgets from the pandemic is the AraNet 4 CO2 monitor. I carry it with me whenever I am curious about an indoor space. This easy-to-use monitor gives a simple red-yellow-green reading of the CO2 level. At a green level (<1000 ppm) it is harder to transmit an airborne viral infection. At a red level (>1400 ppm) it is much easier to catch a virus if someone else in the room is sick. I use this in restaurants and on airplanes, for instance, to help guide my actions. As a bonus, CO2 levels also correlate with alertness and productivity. When CO2 levels drift into the yellow range (>1000 ppm), cognit...

In-Office Treatment for Chronic Rhinitis: Interview with Brian Shields, Neurent Medical CEO
Neurent Medical, a medtech company based in Galway, Ireland, has developed the NEUROMARK system to treat chronic rhinitis via a simple in-office procedure which targets the nerves responsible for many common symptoms. Chronic rhinitis affects a huge number of people and has been estimated to affect 1 in 4 people in the U.S. Symptoms are consistent with chronic inflammation of the mucosal membrane in the nose, leading to a variety of issues including sneezing, postnasal drip, congestion, and itching. Conventional therapies involve long-term pharmacological interventions which meet with mixed success and require patients ...

Do thunderstorms worsen asthma and COPD symptoms?
Anyone familiar with hay fever understands that weather impacts respiratory symptoms. However, many of weather’s effects on respiratory function remain unclear. One unanswered question is the extent to which storms affect people with chronic lung disease, particularly the type affecting the way air moves in and out of the lungs. These “obstructive lung diseases” are characterized by problems with airway narrowing. The most common obstructive lung diseases are asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The two main types of COPD are chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Obstructive lung diseases affect a...

Save the trees, prevent the sneeze
When I worked at Greenpeace for five years before I attended medical school, a popular slogan was, “think globally, act locally.” As I write this blog about climate change and hay fever, I wonder if wiping off my computer that I’ve just sneezed all over due to my seasonal allergies counts as abiding by this aphorism? (Can you clean a computer screen with a tissue?) Come to think of it, my allergies do seem to be worse in recent years. So do those of my patients. It seems as if I’m prescribing nasal steroids and antihistamines, recommending over-the-counter eye drops, and discussing ways to avoid allergens much more...

The Placebo Effect, Digested – 10 Amazing Findings
By Christian Jarrett The placebo effect usually triggers an eye-brow raise or two among even the most hard-nosed of skeptics. We may not be able to forecast the future or move physical objects with our minds, but the placebo effect is nearly as marvellous (Ben Goldacre once called it the “coolest, strangest thing in medicine”). The term “placebo effect” is short-hand for how our mere beliefs about the effectiveness of an inert treatment or intervention can lead to demonstrable health benefits and cognitive changes – an apparently incontrovertible demonstration of the near-magical power of mind ove...

Itchy Eyes: Allergies are Crying Out for Attention
In many ways, the eyes are the windows of the body. When children have itchy eyes, it can disrupt their days – and nights. Itchy eyes often distract kids and decrease their ability to learn new material. If this weren’t bad enough, they can cause kids to sleep less well. For some kids, the difference in sleep can make them moody and hungry. Hangry is not what any parent, teacher or child wants. Why Do Kids Get Itchy Eyes? The human body is armed with an amazing immune system that includes an array of protection devices. The respiratory system tightens up when foreign particles are introduced. Could that rash be from wheat?
Grains can play havoc with your skin. The prolamin proteins, such as gliadin,  trigger autoimmune skin reactions and turn antibodies against the skin enzymes, their lectins fan the fires of inflammation, their proteins provoke allergies, and their amylopectins send blood sugar and insulin sky-high and provoke the skin-disrupting hormone insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF). The whole grain package adds up to an impressive collection of skin conditions that can take a variety of forms, from simple red, itchy rashes to scaly, oily raised patches to large vesicles to gangrene. Because hair and nails are also considere...
