Third application cycle …crazy question
This is my third time applying to allopathic medical school. My scores are okay (50 percentile MCAT), 3.4s /3.7c gpa, typical ec (volunteering in a hosptial, shadowing a FM doc)…so pretty cookie cutter applicant. But each year I improve my application, for example, I went on a volunteer mission to Haiti this year. I feel pretty standard across the board but, I think by the third application cycle I should’ve been selected. Overall very frustrated; My study buddies have all gotten in... How do you decide what is clinical vs non clinical volunteering?
I have a lot of volunteer experience but im not sure if I can use both sections. I have 2400 at a volunteer fire department as an EMT. But I also have a lot working volunteer ambulance service in Haiti. I am planning on going back every year to Haiti for a month or two a year. Can I use the fire department as clinical, and the Haiti as non clinical, or do I need something that is different? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Potential switch to ophthalmology from another residency questions
I am seeking advice regarding GME funding with a change in residency. Any resources would be much appreciated. I am about to finish my PGY3 year in radiology. In short, I was never exposed to ophthalmology in medical school, went on a humanitarian medical trip in Haiti, and got to work extensively with an ophthalmologist, and I've realized that I like it a million times more. I've continued by doing some post call shadowing with some community ophthalmologists, and I've been seriously... Diabetes Crisis in Haiti
by Anil (Posted Tue Dec 13, 2016 1:10 am) Diabetes is the most common cause of the spread of the diseases observed in the different parts of the world with Haiti too.in my view the best way to get away from the diabetes crises is to avoid the sugar related products and use sugar free products. one should take care to get and come over the major cause of diabetes by taking the medicines at regular interval. How do you refer to black people in a politically correct way?
In day to day speech I call black people black people. I'm not sure if medical schools would like if I called black people black people though. I would say African Americans, but that doesn't include Haitians and Jamaicans, etc. and "of the African Diaspora" sounds like I'm trying too hard. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Diabetes Crisis in Haiti
by foville1859 (Posted Wed Nov 27, 2013 8:07 pm)I think there has been a general crisis in the health-care system in Haiti. As it pertains to diabetes specifically, one issue is the lack of supplies:"When I tried to help three kids with diabetes, there was not even a glucose meter to be found in the hospital. All this makes it near to impossible to help people."So to help out, the most obvious way would be to donate diabetes testing supplies, insulin, and other paraphernalia. We have lots of those things cheaply available in the USA so it would hardly be difficult to spare some for the people in Haiti (Source: Med Student Guide)
