Are Essential Oils Safe?
People use essential oils a variety of ways: as lotions, for hair care, aromatherapy, cleaning products and more. But are essential oils safe? Some research in the past has linked essential oils to hormone disturbances, with some suggesting a link between the oils and abnormal breast growth in young boys, called prepubertal gynecomastia. Now, a new study suggests that compounds in essential oils — specifically lavender and tea tree oil — may have properties that can disrupt hormones. The suspicions that essential oils may be endocrine disrupters originated from a 2007 report in the New England Journal of Medici...

Chemicals in lavender and tea tree oil appear to be hormone disruptors
(The Endocrine Society) A new study lends further evidence to a suspected link between abnormal breast growth in young boys--called prepubertal gynecomastia--and regular exposure to lavender or tea tree oil, by finding that key chemicals in these common plant-derived oils act as endocrine-disrupting chemicals. The study results will be presented Monday at ENDO 2018, the Endocrine Society's 100th annual meeting in Chicago. (Source: EurekAlert! - Biology)

In Klinefelter Syndrome Patients, What are the Common Behavioral Problems?
Discussion Klinefelter syndrome (KS) is a common genetic abnormaly with a prevalence of 1 in ~650 male births. It was first described in 1942 by Dr. Harry Klinefelter. It is associated with at least one extra X chromosome with the most common karyotype (~80% of patients) being 47 XXY. Other karyotypes are seen along with mosaicism. It is believed that although it is very prevalent, only about 25-33% of people with KS are identified. About 10% are identified before puberty with the rest usually identified because of hypogonadism and tall stature especially in teenage years or due to infertility in adulthood. KS is diagnosed...

Many Commonly Used Drugs Are Useless
Some medications are life saving. I am so thankful for the trusty med that tames my atrial fibrillation. Many meds are helpful -- demonstrating superiority to placebo in ways that are clearly clinically significant and life enhancing. But many (perhaps most) drugs are probably no more than very expensive placebos. Patients get prescriptions from doctors when their symptoms are most severe and improve with time and positive expectation, not because the med is really effective. Doctors and patients need independent, objective information on drug efficacy and risks. The multibillion dollar pharma marketing machine can tu...

What is a Ganglion Cyst?
Discussion Lumps and bumps in the pediatric age group are most often benign. They can be from unwitnessed/unrecognized trauma (e.g. leg bruise, Osgood-Schlater disease, insect bites), normal pubertal changes (e.g. gynecomastia, testicular enlargement, acne) or normal variants (e.g. prominence of mastoid or occipital process). Some are often uncomplicated but need appropriate treatment (e.g. early abscess formation, inguinal hernia, dermoid cyst). Prominent lymph nodes are a very common reason for parents to come to the physician. Patients and families are often distressed by these masses and seek help because “they ...
