Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine: say relational or functional, not holistic

Prevalence of use of on-label and off-label psychotropics in the Greek pediatric population
With a global increased use of psychotropics in pediatrics, their off-label use is a concern due to uncertainty and risk. Data on psychotropics use in the Greek pediatric population do not exist to date. We analyzed retrospective data from the nationwide pharmacy claim database, to estimate the prevalence of psychotropics in pediatrics focusing on off-label use (March 2016-October 2019). In total 63,782 pediatric subjects had at least one identified psychotropic prescription. The prevalence of psychotropics use was 5.1–14.6/1,000 pediatric inhabitants. When excluding 42,508 subjects who received only short-time hydroxyzi...

The Fagerstr öm Test for Nicotine Dependence, as a prognostic factor, in current smokers with and without COPD: A cross-sectional study in northern Greece
CONCLUSION: The Fagerström score appears to indicate a higher probability for COPD and lung function deterioration when assessed along with age in current smokers. Smoking cessation support programs are fundamental to COPD prevention and management.PMID:38476003 | DOI:10.1177/14799731241235213 (Source: Chronic Respiratory Disease)

Bridging gaps in cancer cachexia Care: Current insights and future perspectives
Cachexia, Greek term indicating “poor physical status”, is a life-threatening wasting syndrome whose main manifestations are severe weight loss and skeletal muscle depletion. Cachexia usually emerges in patients affected by inflammatory conditions, including cancer [1,2]. Up to 80 % of patients with advanced cancer experienc e cachexia. Pancreatic, oesophageal, gastric, head, neck, lung, and liver malignancies are commonly associated to cachexia’s risk [3–5]. (Source: Cancer Treatment Reviews)

SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence among children in Greece during Omicron variant period
Conclusions During the Omicron period, seropositivity significantly increased, as a result of higher transmissibility. Neonates and infants have lower antibody titers compared to other age groups, while young children aged 1 –4 years old present higher antibody titers, suggesting that this age group may mount a higher antibody response. Continuous surveillance seroprevalence studies are needed in children, in order to identify the true extent of SARS-CoV-2 and guide the planning of adequate public health measures. Genotyping of ticks: first molecular report of Hyalomma asiaticum and molecular detection of tick-borne bacteria in ticks and blood from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan
This study presented the first genetic report of Hy. asiaticum ticks in Pakistan. Moreover, genetically confirmed tick species were molecularly analyzed by PCR for detection of Rickettsiales DNA using partial fragments of 16S rDNA, 190-kDa outer membrane protein A (ompA), and 120-kDa outer membrane protein B (ompB) genes. In addition, blood samples were analyzed to identify Rickettsiales bacteria using the aforementioned genes. Rickettsiales bacteria were found in 24/126 (19.05%) ticks and 4/16 (25.00%) in symptomatic cattle’s blood. The obtained ompA and ompB sequences from Hy. asiaticum ticks showed 99.73%–99.87% wit...

Persistence on subcutaneous tocilizumab as monotherapy or in combination with synthetic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs in rheumatoid arthritis patients in Greece (EMBRACE study): a multicenter, post-marketing, non-interventional, observational trial
ConclusionsThe current study confirms the favorable safety and effectiveness of TCZ-SC as well as its acceptability by RA patients in Greece, with sustained high persistence rates up to 52  weeks. TCZ-SC offers a sustainable treatment response in RA.Key Points•Based upon clinical and patient-reported outcomes, TCZ-SC is a highly effective and safe treatment modality in patients with moderate-to-severe RA.•Persistence to TCZ-SC was high throughout the study, both as monotherapy and in combination with csDMARDs.•TCZ-SC is effective both as monotherapy and when used in combination with other csDMARDs regardless of the ...

Anexelekto (AXL) no more: microRNA-155 (miR-155) controls the “Uncontrolled” in SARS-CoV-2
AbstractAXL is the gene that encodes the Anexelekto (AXL) receptor tyrosine kinase that demonstrates significant roles in various cellular processes, including cell growth, survival, and migration. Anexelekto is a Greek word meaning excessive and uncontrolled, semantically implying the crucial involvement of AXL in cancer and immune biology, and in promoting cancer metastasis. AXL overexpression appears to drive epithelial to mesenchymal transition, tumor angiogenesis, decreased antitumor immune response, and resistance to therapeutic agents. Recently, AXL has been reported to play important roles in several viral infectio...

Clarifying Human Dignity in Forensic Practice
We present recent scholarship related to human dignity and highlight the importance of dignity in forensic practice. Focusing on dignity in evaluator-evaluee and doctor-patient relationships should improve forensic work. Training in dignity-imbued forensic practice should remind us of the human dimensions of those we serve in the forensic arena.PMID:38467446 | DOI:10.29158/JAAPL.230118-23 (Source: Journal of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law)
