The Added Value of MRI-Based Targeted Biopsy in Biopsy-Na ïve Patients: A Propensity-Score Matched Comparison
CONCLUSION: The CB approach was superior to the SOB approach in detecting csPCa, while no additional detection of ncsPCa was seen. Our results support the application of mpMRI for biopsy-naïve patients with suspicions of prostate cancer.PMID:38592166 | DOI:10.3390/jcm13051355 (Source: Clinical Prostate Cancer)

Leachability of hexavalent chromium from fly ash-marl mixtures in Sarigiol basin, Western Macedonia, Greece: environmental hazard and potential human health risk
The objective of this study is the investigation of Cr (VI) concentration in leachates of fly ash and marl mixtures and the determination of its solubility under different pH conditions. Samples of fly ash were collected from the Power Plant of Agios Dimitrios. Additionally, samples of marl were collected from the mine of South Field, and both samples were mixed and prepared in in different proportions (% w.t.). The leaching experiments were carried out according to the EN-12457/1-4 (2003) standard under different pH conditions and chemical analysis of the leachates were performed by spectrophotometry with diphenylcarbazid...

Determination of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol, 11-nor-carboxy-Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol in human plasma and urine after a commercial cannabidiol oil product intake
ConclusionThe results showed that Δ9-THC is likely to be found in plasma although at low concentrations. In addition, the detection of 11-nor-carboxy- Δ9-THC in both urine and plasma samples raises questions and concerns for the proper interpretation of toxicological results, especially considering Greece ’s zero tolerance law applied in DUID and workplace cases. The importance of the fourth Greek key motif of human γD-crystallin in maintaining lens transparency-the tale told by the tail
CONCLUSIONS: Loss of 39 amino acids in the fourth Greek key motif of human γD-crystallin affects the secondary and tertiary structures and exposes the hydrophobic residues to the solvent. These changes make the molecule less stable, resulting in the formation of light-scattering particles, which explains the importance of the fourth Greek key in the underlying mechanism of opacification and cataract.PMID:38586607 | PMC:PMC10994683 (Source: Molecular Vision)

Genes, Vol. 15, Pages 458: Characteristics of the Genetic Spread of Carbapenem-Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii in a Tertiary Greek Hospital
This study aimed to analyze the molecular epidemiology trends of multidrug-resistant A. baumannii isolates in a tertiary hospital in Athens, Greece. A total of 43 clinical isolates of extensively drug-resistant (XDRAB), pan-drug-resistant (PDRAB), and CRAB were collected from patients suffering from blood infection, hospitalized between 2016 and 2020 at the internal medicine clinics and the ICU. A.baumannii isolates underwent testing for Ambler class B and D carbapenemases and the detection of ISAba1, and were typed, initially, using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, and, subsequently, using sequence-based typing and multi...

Nomina anatomica-unde venient et quo vaditis?
AbstractAs the title indicates, this article deals with the origins of anatomic terminology and its development up to the present day. The first attempt to name anatomical structures in animals and humans date back to Alkmaion, i.e. to the fifth century BC. Further work has been done at the same time by the Hippocratics and about 100 years later by Aristotle. As the Alexandrians Erasistratos and Herophilos first in history dissected human bodies, they expanded the anatomical terms. Until Celsus (around Christ’s birth) and even later on, anatomical terminology was almost exclusively based on the Greek language. Thus, Ce...

Healthy Diets and Lifestyles in the World: Mediterranean and Blue Zone People Live Longer. Special Focus on Gut Microbiota and Some Food Components
Endocr Metab Immune Disord Drug Targets. 2024 Apr 2. doi: 10.2174/0118715303271634240319054728. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLongevity has been associated with healthy lifestyles, including some dietary regimens, such as the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) and the Blue Zone (BZ) diets. MedDiet relies on a large consumption of fruit, vegetables, cereals, and extra-virgin olive oil, with less red meat and fat intake. Four major BZ have been recognized in the world, namely, Ogliastra in Sardinia (Italy), Ikaria (Greece), the Peninsula of Nicoya (Costa Rica), and Okinawa (Japan). Extreme longevity in these areas has been associa...
