Biomed Pharmacother. 2024 Apr 16;174:116581. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2024.116581. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNaringenin is a flavonoid found in many fruits and herbs, most notably in grapefruits. In recent years, this compound and its derivatives have been of great interest due to their high biological activity, including fungicidal and bactericidal effects, also in relation to multidrug-resistant bacteria. Membrane interactions of naringenin oxime (NO) and its 7-O-alkyl (7-alkoxy) derivatives, such as methyl (7MENO), ethyl (7ETNO), isopropyl (7IPNO), n-butyl (7BUNO) and n-pentyl (7PENO) were studied. Thermotropic propert...

Sensors, Vol. 24, Pages 2384: Scented Solutions: Examining the Efficacy of Scent Interventions in Mitigating Driving Fatigue
This study explored changes in EEG frequency bands (alpha, beta, theta, and gamma) and the activity of EEG metrics (R(α/β), Rθ/(α+β) and R(α+θ)/(α+β)) in the temporal lobe during driving tasks, selected fatigued driving identifiers, and aided validation by investigating subjective fatigue with the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS). The EEG indicators all increased, with a significant increase in R(α/β). R(α/β) was combined with the KSS to explore th...

Cellulose nanofiber-based multifunctional composite films integrated with zinc doped-grapefruit peel-based carbon quantum dots
This study aimed to develop a multifunctional active composite film to extend the shelf life of minced pork. The composite film was prepared by incorporating zinc-doped grapefruit peel-derived carbon quantum dots (Zn-GFP-CD) into a cellulose nanofiber (CNF) matrix. The resulting film significantly improved UV-blocking properties from 39.0 % to 85.7 % while maintaining the film transparency. Additionally, the CNF/Zn-GFP-CD5% composite film exhibits strong antioxidant activity with ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging activities of 99.8 % and 77.4 %, respectively. The composite film also showed excellent antibacterial activity a...

Multiplexed gene editing in citrus by using a multi-intron containing Cas9 gene
In this study, we present a new approach employing a multi-intron containing Cas9 gene plus multiple gRNAs separated with tRNA sequences to target the phytoene desaturase gene in both 'Carrizo' citrange and 'Duncan' grapefruit. Notably, using this unified vector significantly boosted editing efficiency in both citrus varieties, showcasing mutations in all three designated targets. The implementation of this multiplex gene editing system with a multi-intron-containing Cas9 plus a gRNA-tRNA array demonstrates a promising avenue for efficient citrus genome editing, equipping us with potent tools in the ongoing battle against ...

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 1236: The Validation and Determination of Empagliflozin Concentration in the Presence of Grapefruit Juice Using HPLC for Pharmacokinetic Applications
In conclusion, our results showed that the co-administration of grapefruit with empagliflozin should be cautiously monitored and avoided, in which grapefruit elevates the plasma level of empagliflozin. This may be attributed to the inhibition of the uridine enzyme in the grapefruit by hesperidin, naringin, and flavonoid. (Source: Molecules)

Anti-breast cancer activity of the essential oil from grapefruit mint (Mentha suaveolens × piperita)
Fitoterapia. 2024 Feb 26:105875. doi: 10.1016/j.fitote.2024.105875. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGrapefruit mint (Mentha suaveolens × piperita) is a hybrid, perennial, and aromatic plant widely cultivated all over the world and used in the food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industries mostly for its valuable essential oil. Herein, we evaluated the anticancer activity of the grapefruit mint essential oil, cultivated in Iran. For the chemical composition analysis of essential oil, GC-MS was used. MTT assay was utilized for assessing the cytotoxic activity of the essential oil. The type of cell death was determined by anne...

Naringin alleviates liver damage induced by D-galactosamine (D-gal) in mice through down-regulation of CYP2E1 and P53 hyperactivity
This study aims to study the potential antioxidants and the anti-inflammatory effects of naringin in mice-induced liver damage by D-galactosamine (D-gal) administration. Mice were divided into four groups: group 1, the normal control group; group 2, the D-gal group was injected (200  mg /kg; s.c.) daily for 8 weeks; and groups 3 and 4, naringin groups received naringin (150 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg; p.o.) daily concurrent with D-gal for 8 weeks. Serum was prepared to measure aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminases (ALT). Liver tissue homogenate was prepared to me asure nitric oxide (NO), catalase, cytochrome...

Development of Simplified Recombinase Polymerase Amplification Assay for Rapid and Robust Detection of Citrus Yellow Vein Clearing Virus
Curr Microbiol. 2024 Feb 22;81(4):103. doi: 10.1007/s00284-024-03614-y.ABSTRACTCitrus is an economically important fruit crop, belongs to family Rutaceae, cultivated commercially in over 130 countries, which holds a leading profitable position in the international market. The most important citrus varieties are mandarins, oranges, lemons, sweet limes, grapefruits and pomelos. Citrus yellow vein clearing virus (CYVCV) is an important graft transmissible plant pathogen known to reduce productivity of citrus fruits due to its predominant association and widespread occurrence. Requirement of fast, reliable, efficient & eco...

A fluorescent DNAzyme-based biosensor for the detection of lead ions using carbon quantum dots prepared from grapefruit peel
New J. Chem., 2024, Advance Article DOI: 10.1039/D3NJ05829H, PaperWeiqin Zhao, Chun Huang, Youyu Zhu, Yuangang Li, Yingfeng Duan, Jie Gao The key design strategy lies in hemin/G-CQDs. The fluorescence of G-CQDs was quenched after binding with hemin and recovered after removing hemin by combining with a G-quadruplex.
