Computational Identification of Protein Kinases and Kinase-Specific Substrates in Plants
The protein phosphorylation catalyzed by protein kinases (PKs) plays an essential role in almost all biological progresses in plants. Thus, the identification of PKs and kinase-specific substrates is fundamental for understanding the regulatory mechanisms of protein phosphorylation especially in controlling plant growth and development. In this chapter, we describe the computational methods and protocols for the identification of PKs and kinase-specific substrates in plants, by using Vitis vinifera as an example. First, the proteome sequences and experimentally identified phosphorylation sites (p-sites) in Vitis vinifera w...

What Is Face Serum, And How Does It Work?
We're always on the lookout for beauty products that aid in our pursuit to age gracefully. Even though our medicine cabinets are equipped with essentials like sunscreen and eye cream, face serum is something we are gradually integrating into our rotation.
Adopting a facial serum seems intimidating at first with its hefty price tag. Then we are reminded of all the skincare benefits, from clearing blemishes to smoothing wrinkles, and feel compelled to give it a try.
To ensure that we were using the product correctly, we took our face serum concerns to three experts. We wanted to know how often we should apply the serum, wh...

The Humane Omnivore: An Oxymoron?
Let's just jump right into the deep end of the pool and tackle a topic that produces fevered debate and deeply emotional responses: Is it possible to consume animal protein and still lay claim to a modicum of concern for animal welfare? I don't propose to answer that question, merely to explore the opportunities in our current social construct to make the attempt.
Going straight to the elephant in the room -- yes, without question, the inherently humane course that avoids harm to animals is vegetarianism, or even more strictly, veganism.
But going back thousands of years to our hunter-gatherer forbears, it can be argued...

Frog eggs help researchers find new information on grapevine disease
Vitis vinifera are common grapevines and are the world's favorite wine-producing varietal. However, research has shown that grapevines are susceptible to powdery mildew, a plant disease, which contributes to significant crop loss for most commercial wine varietals that are cultivated each year. Now, researchers have used frog eggs to determine the cause of this disease, and have found that a specific gene in the varietal Cabernet Sauvingon, contributes to its susceptibility. Compound in grape seed extract 'kills prostate cancer cells'
New research suggests that a component found in grape seed extract is effective in killing prostate cancer cells. This is according to a study published in the journal Nutrition and Cancer.Investigators from the University of Colorado Cancer Center have analyzed the potential of grape seed extract (GSE) for its anti-cancer properties over the last 10 years. But although previous research from the team has demonstrated its effectiveness against cancer cells and how it works, it was unknown as to which element of GSE produces these effects.
