Y2Q and You
By KIM BELLARD Chances are, you’ve at least somewhat concerned about your privacy, especially your digital privacy.  Chances are, you’re right to be.  Every day, it seems, there are more reports about data beeches, cyberattacks, and selling or other misuse of confidential/personal data.  We talk about privacy, but we’re failing to adequately protect it. But chances are you’re not worried nearly enough. Y2Q is coming.  That is, I must admit, a phrase I had not heard of until recently. If you are of a certain age, you’ll remember Y2K, the fear that the year 2000 would cause computers ev...

The Djokovic saga: Vaccination policies revisited
No matter your politics or judgment on the COVID-19 vaccine, we can agree that the visuals of the world’s number one tennis player being detained and treated like a criminal when he went to the Australian Open last year were unsettling, and the Australian government should have better handled his case. To recap, Mr. Djokovic Read more… The Djokovic saga: Vaccination policies revisited originally appeared in KevinMD.com. (Source: Kevin, M.D. - Medical Weblog)

Health > Care, Border Runs
November will mark the beginning of the 24th year of this blog.  While my posts are far from frequent, I hope that each one is helping others in some way.  That’s always been my goal.  Along these lines, I’ll offer the answer to a question I was asked by a start-up health IT company yesterday, and will also outline the process for the Costa Rica ==> Nicaragua ==> Costa Rica border run, which is both necessary and relatively easy.   Health > Care “Dr. Reider – why are you interested / willing to help out little company?”Some context – and then my response.  (After – ...

Weekly Roundup – October 21, 2023
Welcome to our Healthcare IT Today Weekly Roundup. Each week, we’ll be providing a look back at the articles we posted and why they’re important to the healthcare IT community. We hope this gives you a chance to catch up on anything you may have missed during the week. Driving Patient Behavior and Connecting Patients With Care Teams. Patients are embracing the notion of monitoring their health every day, but health systems aren’t, John Lynn discovered in a chat with Rich Steinle and Scott Pradels at Carium. The conversation also covered how to remove barriers to adoption of remote monitoring technology. Read more...

Aspects of Social Determinants of Health: Specific Types of Help
This is the final article in a series about social determinants of health (SDoH). Previous articles covered the definition, collection, sharing, and use of SDoH. I’ll finish with a look at some specific areas of intervention. We’ve seen the importance of personal interventions, through interviews and evaluating SDoH, to solve problems. In rural areas, where it might be daunting either to travel to a doctor or to schedule an online visit with poor Internet access, home visits fill the gap. Conduit Health Partners is one organization that does so. A patient can speak to a nurse immediately—as opposed to calling...

Aspects of Social Determinants of Health: Collecting Data
This article shows how organizations are collecting it. Andrew Eye, CEO of the healthcare data science company ClosedLoop, estimates that about 15% of physicians collect SDoH-related data from patients and use it to assess their needs. The percentage is much higher in some areas. Data can be spotty, according to Eye, who says for instance that data from Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) often lacks racial identifications. He also says that collecting and processing the data is labor-intensive, because it can be hard to persuade patients to talk openly about financial and logistical problems. At the institu...

Amazon In Healthcare: Disruption, Data Nightmares And Digital Health Dreams
A little while ago we explored Amazon’s initial forays into the healthcare sector, a move that positioned the tech behemoth alongside traditional players in the industry. Amazon’s initial focus was evident: disruption. From obtaining drug distribution licenses in over 10 US states, through acquiring the startup PillPack, to the launch of Amazon Pharmacy and Amazon Care, the company’s intent was clear – to reshape the healthcare landscape. For a detailed look into the first chapters of Amazon’s healthcare journey, click here. Fast forward to today, and the landscape appears to have shifted d...

Your Insulin of the Future Could Be " Made in China " if Big PBMs Have a Say in the Matter
Back on June 16, 2022, I published an article on LinkedIn entitled "How the Civica Insulin Announcement May Be Disruptive to the PBM Kickback Scheme" (see the article athttps://www.linkedin.com/pulse/how-civica-insulin-announcement-may-disruptive-pbm-scheme-strumello/ if you wish to read it) which predicted that a growing number of insulin biosimilars whose active pharmaceutical ingredients (API ' s) are cultured in offshore laboratories are forecast to hit the U.S. market in the next few years. According to the FDA and the individual companies whom I also follow on LinkedIn, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) typ...

All by myself … don ’ t wanna be
Throughout my career, I’ve been interested in how and why people see clinicians about their pain. I’m intrigued by the journey before, during and afterwards. I’m interested in the social factors influencing choices in healthcare. If I’ve been gardening over the weekend and I wake up Monday with a sore back it’s easy to see a physio here in NZ. That visit is likely paid for by our accident compensation system (24/7 no-fault scheme paid for by taxes and levies). And the jolly joy germ in me thinks “Well at least that means people don’t have to see a doctor first” – but...

Bloody Religion
“With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.”Steven Weinberg In 2003, I started a web page that documented the horrors of the Iraq war. The title of the page was corrie.html, because one of the first entries was about Rachel Corrie. This was it. On Sunday, 16th March 2003, a 23-year-old American peace activist, Rachel Corrie, was crushed to death by a bulldozer as she tried to prevent the Israeli army destroying homes in the Gaza Strip. You can read here some of the emails that she ...
