A Speech For The Ages – 83 Years Ago This Christmas
By MIKE MAGEE On the evening of December 29, 1940, with election to his 3rd term as President secured, FDR delivered these words as part of his sixteenth “Fireside Chat”: “There can be no appeasement with ruthlessness…No man can tame a tiger into a kitten by stroking it.” Millions of Americans, and millions of Britains were tuned in that evening, as President Roosevelt made clear where he stood while carefully avoiding over-stepping his authority in a nation still in the grips of a combative and isolationist opposition party. That very evening, the Germans Luftwaffe, launched their largest yet raid ...

QHIN Reactions at the ONC Annual Meeting
We previously shared ONC’s big QHIN announcement which shared the names of five officially designated QHINs as part of TEFCA: eHealth Exchange Epic Nexus Health Gorilla KONZA MedAllies No doubt, the timing of this announcement was planned to coincide with the ONC Annual Meeting in Washington DC.  It was Healthcare IT Today’s first time attending the ONC Annual Meeting despite multiple years of FOMO for not attending.  This year I’m glad I finally made it happen since we were able to hop on video with all of the officially designated QHINs to get their reaction on the announcement.  Plus, we were able...

AI Could Have “Unimaginable Consequences” For Democratic Societies, Says Expert.
By MIKE MAGEE His biography states, “He speaks to philosophical questions about the fears and possibilities of new technology and how we can be empowered to shape our future. His work to bridge cultures spans artificial intelligence, cognition, language, music, creativity, ethics, society, and policy.” He embraces the title “cross-disciplinary,” and yet his PhD thesis at UC Berkeley in 1980 “was one of the first to spur the paradigm shift toward machine learning based natural language processing technologies.” Credited with inventing and building “the world’s first global-scale online language transla...

Where is AI in Medicine Going? Ask The Onion.
By MIKE MAGEE One of the top ten headlines of all time created by the satirical geniuses at The Onion was published 25 years ago this December. It read, “God Answers Prayers Of Paralyzed Little Boy. ‘No,’ Says God.” The first paragraph of that column introduced us to Timmy Yu, an optimistic 7-year old, who despite the failures of the health system had held on to his “precious dream.” As the article explained, “From the bottom of his heart, he has hoped against hope that God would someday hear his prayer to walk again. Though many thought Timmy’s heavenly plea would never be answered, his dream finally...

How Digital Health Companies Attract Software Engineers: Goals
Companies creating health care applications, digital fitness solutions, and other health-related software compete fiercely for technical staff. An article by Developers.Net cites various statistics suggesting that demand outstrips the supply of programmers by hundreds of thousands of people. Other disciplines (such as needed for data science and machine learning) are also hotly contested. Anmol Madan, co-founder and CEO of RadiantGraph, says that tech experts might need to accept a pay cut to work for a small digital health company. Startups just can’t compete with major employers such as Google on salary and benefit...

Bain to Buy Guidehouse in $5 Billion Deal
Consulting Firm Spun Off From PwC in 2018 Bain Capital said it would acquire Guidehouse, a consulting firm that advises government organizations and businesses, in a deal valuing it at $5.3 billion including debt. The firms announced the agreement on Monday. The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday night that the parties were close to a deal. The move is the latest by private equity firms to scoop up professional services providers as consulting growth in certain areas slows. It is also a rare deal for an asset class that is struggling to find exits and to return capital to awaiting limited partners. In 2018, Veritas Ca...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, December 4th 2023
This study produced a great deal of data that continues to be mined for insights into human aging and effects of calorie restriction in a long-lived species such as our own, to contrast with the sizable effects on health and longevity in short-lived species such as mice. In particular, and the topic for today, cellular senescence and its role in degenerative aging has garnered far greater interest in the research community in the years since the CALERIE study took place. Thus in today's open access paper, scientists examine CALERIE study data to find evidence for calorie restriction to reduce the burden of cellular ...

XPRIZE Healthspan, $101 Million to Incentivize Rejuvenation in Old People
Prizes for success in research and development can work well, if coupled with suitable publicity and activism. Such efforts have a long history, going back to the well-documented longitude rewards offered by the British government in the 1700s. More recently, the original Ansari X Prize for suborbital flight was a very successful example of this sort of initiative, and was launched around the same time as the Methuselah Mouse Prize to spur greater efforts to extend life in animal models. The Palo Alto Longevity Prize followed later with similar goals. Unfortunately for the ability of longevity-focused prizes to generate on...

Government surveillance: How electronic prescription records are changing medicine
Every time an American fills a prescription, a searchable electronic database record is made. This record is kept, like the paper records of a few decades ago, to allow for verification of medications dispensed in the U.S. But in the past, to access these records, enforcement agencies had to get a search warrant signed by Read more… Government surveillance: How electronic prescription records are changing medicine originally appeared in KevinMD.com. Patient Engagement through Communication Platforms
With the increase in digital health, remote care, and patient access, the need for a reliable platform to conduct everything has also increased. But while we all need reliable communication platforms, properly utilizing them is an entirely different story. There is already so much to consider in terms of what works best for your organization, but then you need to rethink everything in terms of what is best for the patient. You might be reassured that it is safe and easy to use on the administrator end, but is it that way on the user end for the patients? For some insights on patient engagement in communication platforms we...
