Primary amenorrhoea
Puberty transforms a girl into a fertile woman, and its social importance  is so great that any deviation from normality may be the cause of considerable embarrassment and anxiety. Delayed puberty in girls is defined as the absence of physical manifestations of puberty by the age of 13 years. Primary amenorrhoea is the absence of menarche and needs to be evaluated in the context of secondary sexual characteristics. Differential diagnoses can be classified according to the level of gonadotrophins. (Source: Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Reproductive Medicine)

Proficiency and compensatory strategies in bilingual children ’s Mandarin Chinese narrative
AbstractNarrative skills play an important role in children ’s reading, communication, and critical thinking. Most studies on narrative skills are based on monolingual children from middle- to upper middle-class populations and few have examined bilingual children’s narratives outside of the western context. These factors may impose different sociocultur al influences on children’s storytelling abilities. The current study focuses on English–Mandarin bilingual children in Singapore and explores: (1) how English–Mandarin bilinguals apply their Mandarin lexical-grammatical proficiency to a given narrative task and ...

Motivations for alcohol consumption in schooled adolescents: analysis of discussion groups
CONCLUSIONS: Public health strategies focused on preventing alcohol consumption in adolescents should incorporate their motivations to achieve greater efficiency, paying due attention to sex/gender variables.PMID:38603940 | DOI:10.1016/j.aprim.2024.102931 (Source: Atencion Primaria)

Role of lens in early refractive development: evidence from a large cohort of Chinese children
CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that during early refractive development, refractions cluster around or above +1.00 D. There is a pushback process in which increases in the rate of LP occur in parallel with increases in axial elongation.PMID:38604621 | DOI:10.1136/bjo-2023-324882 (Source: The British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Genes, Vol. 15, Pages 481: Association between the GLP1R A316T Mutation and Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis in French Canadian and Italian Cohorts
alérie Marcil Studies have revealed anthropometric discrepancies in girls with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) compared to non-scoliotic subjects, such as a higher stature, lower weight, and lower body mass index. While the causes are still unknown, it was proposed that metabolic hormones could play a role in AIS pathophysiology. Our objectives were to evaluate the association of GLP1R A316T polymorphism in AIS susceptibility and to study its relationship with disease severity and progression. We performed a retrospective case–control association study with controls and AIS patients from an Italian...

Suppressing Emotions, Feeling Like a Burden Linked to Suicidal Behavior in Preteens
Preteen children who have more trouble expressing their feelings and who perceive themselves as a greater burden to others may be on the cusp of having suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB), according to areport in theJournal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.Increases in caregiver criticism and conflict are also risk factors for impending STBs, according to the study. Healthy eating index and muscle mass are associated stronger with blood pressure than muscle strength in adolescent girls living in urban area
This study aims to examine the relationship between muscle strength, eating index and blood pressure in adolescent girls. Growing studies show earlier onset of hypertension in youth. The prevalence may deteriorate during the COVID-19 pandemic due to unhealthy behavioral changes. Muscle mass (MM) is reported to be associated with blood pressure (BP), but there are limited studies that observed the relationship between the functional properties of muscle (muscle strength [MS]), healthy eating index (HEI) and BP.This cross-sectional study involved 499 girls aged 15–18 years. HEI was generated from a 24-h food recall. MM a...

Exploring differences in substance use behaviours among gender minority and non-gender minority youth: a cross-sectional analysis of the COMPASS study
CONCLUSION: Findings highlight the importance of collecting a GI measure in youth population surveys and prioritizing GMY in substance use-related prevention, treatment and harm reduction programs. Future studies should investigate the effects of GI status on substance use onset and progression among Canadian adolescents over time.PMID:38597806 | DOI:10.24095/hpcdp.44.4.04 (Source: Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention in Canada)

A cross-sectional study of variations in schoolwork stress in academic upper secondary school classes in Mid-Norway
CONCLUSIONS: The main contribution was the discovery of significant variations in schoolwork stress between school classes. We also found that higher mastery climate was linked to lower schoolwork stress, whereas higher performance climate was linked to higher schoolwork stress.PMID:38600071 | DOI:10.1177/14034948241242939 (Source: Scandinavian Journal of Public Health)
