poem
SaudadeDear Nephew-   It ’s me, your Uncle Nobody. You probably don’t remember me. We haven’t seen each other in years. I’m one of those guys who just disappears. Rarely even leave a trace. Nothing you did.  It ' s all my fault.  You were just a child.  Life sweeps you away.  I mean, it swept me away. You don ’t even have to call me Uncle. Think of me as a distant cousin, if that’s more comfortable. Think of me as a ghost. A middle aged failure with a scuffed suitcase. An old cuckoo clock you barely remember from your grandmother’s house. I stopped ticking. I gotta be ...

What Could Possibly Go Wrong? Outbreaks of Injustice Linked by Two Different Dobbs.
BY MIKE MAGEE Under the definition for the noun, epidemic, there are two main (and distinctly different) definitions. I know this fact because it was the beginning point of my preparations earlier this summer for a Fall course on “The History of Epidemics in America” at the Presidents College at the University of Hartford.  The entry reads: Epidemic nounep·i·dem·ic | \ ˌe-pə-ˈde-mik  \Definition of epidemic (Entry 2 of 2)1: an outbreak of disease that spreads quickly and affects many individuals at the same time : an outbreak of epidemic disease2: an outbreak or product of sudden ra...

The Shocking Impact of an Ancestor ’ s Secret Abortion
BY MICHAEL MILLENSON When my siblings and I were young, we were fascinated by my father’s Uncle Byron. Handsome and confident, he drove a big, 1960s-era Chrysler Imperial, had a glamorous job — an executive at a Baltimore radio station — and radiated panache. He also was part of a small family mystery. His father, Louis, was married three times, and Byron was raised by Wife № 3. But he was the biological child of Wife № 2, who died just a few years after his birth from an unknown cause. Thanks to some persistent genealogical research, I recently discovered that cause: Annie Millenson had a botched a...

poem
Op Note XXIXI introduced myself as the surgeon.  The room was darkened.  The curtains were drawn. The patient was pale and waifish in the bed.  Nurses had layered her in blankets.  All you could see was her head.  She was 95 years old. So the chart said. She still lived alone.  Her wince when I pressed her abdomen confirmed the suspicion.  What to do?  She smiled at me, a pink edentulous grin, and whispered “ask them”, nodding toward the pleather couch by the window.  Funny, I hadn ' t noticed anyone when I came in.  But there they were: a little girl in a tartan ...

The Future of 3D Printing Drugs In Pharmacies Is Closer Than You Think
3D printing drugs is not a fantasy anymore. Unbelievable shapes and any kind of drug can be fabricated with groundbreaking technology. The UK biotech company, FabRx believes it could even appear as a regular technique in hospitals and pharmacies for creating personalised drugs in specific doses within 5-10 years. In February 2022 the company announced they developed a technology allowing them to 3D print tablets in 7-17 seconds, a huge improvement from earlier. Print out starfish-shaped drugs for your child at home Somewhere in the 2030s: Annie was called by her daughter’s teacher that she had a high fever...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, August 8th 2022
In conclusion, aging research will benefit from a better definition of how specific regulators map onto age-dependent change, considered on a phenotype-by-phenotype basis. Interviews on Aspects of Aging with Judith Campisi and Dena Dubal
Today I'll point out a pair of interviews with researchers Judith Campisi and Dena Dubal, in which they discuss quite different aspects of aging. Campisi's research has a heavy focus on cellular senescence in aging. Cells become senescent constantly in the body, most because they hit the Hayflick limit on replication imposed upon the somatic cells that are the overwhelming majority of cells in our tissues. Cells can also become senescent because of damage, or encouraged into senescence by the signaling of other, nearby senescent cells. Once senescent, cells are normally quickly removed by the immune system or programmed ce...
