Volatile chemical emissions from essential oils with therapeutic claims
This study investigated VOCs emitted from 14 commercially available essential oils with therapeutic claims, such as beneficial for coughs, colds, flus, relaxation, sleep, tension, headaches, stress, or skin irritation. The essential oils were selected from different brands and types, such as tea tree oil, lavender oil, eucalyptus oil, geranium oil, peppermint oil, bergamot oil, orange oil, and oil blends. Analyses were performed using headspace gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The analyses found 1034 VOCs emitted from the 14 essential oils, representing 378 VOC identities. The most prevalent VOCs (in more than...

Identification of a novel endornavirus in Geranium carolinianum and occurrence within three agroecosystems.
Abstract A putative endornavirus was detected in Carolina geranium (Geranium carolinianum) in Louisiana, USA. The virus was provisionally named Geranium carolinianum endornavirus 1 (GcEV1). The viral RNA was sequenced, and it consisted of 14,625 nt containing a single ORF coding a putative polyprotein of 4815 aa with conserved domains for a helicase 1, peptidase C97, glycosyl transferase GTB-type, and RNA-dependent RNA polymerase 2. The 5'end consisted of 130 nt while the 3'end consisted of 54 nt ending in nine cytosine residues. The closest relative to GcEV1 was Phaseolus vulgaris endornavirus 3. In...

Inorganic mercury and dietary safe feed additives enriched diet impacts on growth, immunity, tissue bioaccumulation, and disease resistance in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus).
Abstract Little is known about the impacts of dietary exposure to inorganic mercury (Hg) for a long duration on the health indicators, growth, and disease resistance in Oreochromis niloticus. Accordingly, the current study was designed to assess the effects of Hg contaminated diets on blood biochemistry, growth, chemical composition, Hg bioaccumulation in the tissues, histopathology of liver and head kidneys, and disease resistance to Aeromonas hydrophila of O. niloticus. Also, the efficiency of citronella oil, geranium oil (GO), curcumin (CUR), Bacillus toyonensis (BT), and Bacillus subtilis (BS) as dieta...

Fragaria vesca-associated virus 1: a new virus related to negeviruses
In this study, the complete genomic sequence of a novel virus was determined by next-generation sequencing of a sample from a symptomatic strawberry plant with severe yellow spots and mosaic on its leaves. Its genomic organization and sequence showed that this virus is related to members of the proposed insect-specific genus “Negevirus”. The sample also contained sequences from the geranium aphidAcyrthosiphon malvae. Although the virus was detected repeatedly in the same plant during the three following years, no other positive samples were obtained from the surroundings or more-distant locations. Reverse transcription...

The Effect of Auxin and Auxin-Producing Bacteria on the Growth, Essential Oil Yield, and Composition in Medicinal and Aromatic Plants.
Abstract Aromatic plants had been used since ancient times for their preservative and medicinal properties, and to impart aroma and flavor to food. Also their secondary metabolites are economically important as drugs, flavor and fragrances, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, dye, and pigments, pesticides, cosmetics, food additives, other industrially biochemical, and also play a major role in the adaptation of plants to their environment. Indole acetıc acid-producing rhizobacteria inoculations increase in stomatal density and level of secondary metabolite and have a synergistic effect on monoterpene biosynt...

Chemical composition of volatiles of eight Geranium L. species from Vlasina plateau (South Eastern Serbia).
Abstract Geranium species are widely used in traditional medicine of Balkan. The aim of this work was to investigate and compare chemical composition of volatile fractions obtained by hydrodistillation from aerial parts of G. macrorrhizum, G. phaeum, G. sanguineum, G. robertianum, G. palustre, G. pyrenaicum, G. columbinum and G. lucidum as well as from underground parts of G. macrorrhizum and G. phaeum , originated from Vlasina plateau in South Eastern Serbia. The volatiles were analysed using GC-MS and GC-FID. G. palustre volatiles have been studied for the first time with β-selinene (18.6%) as character...

Nat Prod Res. 2019 Nov 04;:1-5 Authors: Fekri N, El Amir D, Owis A, AbouZid S Abstract Rose-scented geranium, Pelargonium graveolens L'Hérit. (Geraniaceae), is an economically important plant. GC-MS analysis of the essential oil, prepared by hydro-distillation from this plant species, showed the presence of iso-menthone (15.71%), epi-α-cadinol (15.49%), iso-menthol (6.46%), geranyl formate (6.22%), geraniol (6.16%) and citronellol (5.53%). The composition of the absolute prepared...

Long noncoding RNAs and miRNAs regulating terpene and tartaric acid biosynthesis in rose ‐scented geranium
This study aimed to explore the noncoding RNAs, which have emerged as key regulatory molecules in biological processes, in rose ‐scented geranium. We analyzed RNA‐seq data revealing 26 784 long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) and 871 miRNAs in rose‐scented geranium. A total of 466 lncRNAs were annotated using different plant lncRNA public databases. Furthermore, 372 lncRNAs and 99 miRNAs were detected that target terpene and tartarate biosynthetic pathways. An interactome, comprising of lncRNAs, miRNAs, and mRNAs, was constructed that represents a noncoding RNA regulatory network of the target mRNAs. Real‐time quantitativ...
