Health disclosures as a doctor
I'm sure that I'm just being too nervous about this, but I was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder a few years ago. I was given a SSRI for it at the time, but I got off it once I graduated and had fewer stressors. Since I've been admitted to medical schools, I'm planning on starting them back up. From what I hear, it sounds like a lot of med students and residents are on SSRIs anyways, but I've been wondering what disclosure looks like for me here on out. I can handle my anxiety... It's not GAD
Seems like every patient I see has generalized anxiety disorder listed in their chart. Maybe 1/10 or less actually has it. If you actually bother to draw the meaningful distinctions within everything described as "anxiety", turns out most of these people have one or more of PTSD, OCD, social anxiety disorder, Mdd w/anxious distress, bipolar disorder, hell even legit adhd, sometimes acute appropriate situational anxiety (ie...while waiting for a biopsy result...) literally anything else but... Doing surgery with mental illness?
I am a non-trad who was a car mechanic before deciding I wanted to become a doctor. I love working with my hands. Furthermore, I have 5 kids and a wife currently and want to make sure I can afford to give them a good future. This has lead me to looking at surgical specialties the most. However, I have Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Its not as terrible as some, I am able to still complete all my necessary tasks and if I wouldn't tell you that I have this disorder then you likely would never... Optimal treatment for anxiety?
As I've been studying recently, I've found conflicting information on the optimal treatment of anxiety related disorders in the literature. Few articles compare medications to therapy, particularly in recent years, but the two articles that most directly addressed this question had opposing data. Both articles use Hedge's g to measure effect sizes. 1 meta-analysis ("Psychological and pharmacological treatments for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD): a meta-analysis of randomized... Feeling like I won ’t be a good doctor
Second year vet student and having a hard time believing I can actually turn out to be a good vet. A little bit of back story is that I have generalized anxiety disorder and this feeling of ending up as an inadequate doctor has been growing for the last semester. Grades/tests have been great but after an exam a teacher will reference something like a drug i just got tested on and I completely blank on what it’s used for. On winter break I thought it would be a good idea to shadow clinics in... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

New Clinician Anxiety/Doubt
Hi, all! I'd like to preface this with the recognition that I have generalized anxiety disorder, which I managed well except during every clinical. Now, I'm starting as a new clinician and my anxiety and stress are just unmanageable. I'm always second guessing my treatments, worrying that my patients won't improve, and stressing over improving my documentation speed. I know that some worry is natural, but can anyone speak to their experience in getting through this? I'm not sleeping or... New Clinician Anxiety/Doubt (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Personal Statement and Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Hello, I'm in the middle of writing my personal statement for next cycle. I was wondering if I should mention my 11 year struggle with Generalized Anxiety Disorder. I think it's an integral part of my journey and one that shows just how far I've come as a non trad. It does tie into the "why medicine?" question as the physician who diagnosed me is also the same physician I shadowed. I don't take medication for it. I have a prescription for Xanax for my occasional panic attacks but I keep my... Personal Statement and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Propranolol vs Selective BB for anxiety d/o
Can anyone elaborate why a non-selective BB, classically propranolol, is the beta blocker of choice in performance anxiety and other anxiety disorders? If the mechanism is via reduction of adrenergic activity resulting in slowing HR, reducing tremor, etc.. Shouldn't beta-1 selective BB's be just as effective? Where might blocking B2 receptors be helpful in this? Has anyone had success using b1 selective drugs for generalized anxiety and performance anxiety? Also if you have some... Mentioning my Anxiety Disorder in my Psychiaty PS?
Hello Everyone, I am an MD and will apply for psychiatry residency this year and I have a question regarding my PS. I was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder at the first year of my Medical School. With this experience, I understood how patients feel like, what they are going through, how psychological pain is true and sometimes more painful than physical pain. I gained a great understanding through mental illnesses. It made me more emphatic person. It allowed me to make sure I... Mentioning my Anxiety Disorder in my Psychiaty PS? Any EPs suffer with mental illness?
Hey everyone, Long time lurker, New attending for about 1 year. Wanted to get an idea if anyone else suffers from any type of mental illness? I myself suffer from generalized anxiety disorder. Always knew I had anxiety, really came out when I was in residency when I got the "official" diagnosis. I've been on and off meds and my anxiety comes in waves whenever it feels like it. Sometimes it's crippling, other times an annoyance in the background. It always feels like I'm alone with this even... Any EPs suffer with mental illness? (Source: Student Doctor Network)
