Causes of Heartburn
You've just enjoyed a big meal and are relaxing in front of the TV when it happens. A burning sensation begins to build in the upper abdomen, behind the breastbone, and makes your chest feel like it's on fire. The burning and pain may travel from your diaphragm all the way to your throat, and may be accompanied with a sour taste and the sensation of food re-entering your mouth.
You're suffering from severe heartburn.
Despite the name, heartburn has nothing to do with the heart. It's a digestive problem that occurs when stomach acid comes into contact with the lining of the esophagus, causing irritation. Most people suffe...

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall: Why I'm on the Fast Diet
Fasting diets are all the rage. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall has been on one since New Year, and it seems to be working. But how long will it last?I'm not a serial dieter, or any kind of dieter, but I am interested in what we eat, how we eat, and how it affects our health. Sometimes I think, with mounting impatience, that it's all so bloody obvious. Michael Pollen has it pretty much right in his book In Defence of Food: "Eat food, not too much, mostly plants." Five a day is the government's rather patronising version of that – and woefully fails to emphasise how important it is that most&...

30 Days to Better Sleep: Avoid Heartburn at Night
There are few things as miserable as waking with the discomfort of heartburn. As you make progress in sleeping better, one of the key milestones is avoiding heartburn at night.
Heartburn goes by many names: reflux, gastro-esophageal reflux disease, GERD, water brash, acid indigestion, or pyrosis. It all amounts to the same thing, however. The esophagus is a muscular tube that extends from the mouth to the stomach. At the connection between the esophagus and the stomach is a muscular ring called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). This cincture is meant to close and keep the contents of the stomach from regurgitating bac...

Pill-size camera may make cancer diagnosis easier
Recent news coverage has heralded the arrival of a new “camera you can swallow” that “could help detect early stages of cancer of the oesophagus”.
The high-tech device, about the size of a large vitamin pill, uses optical lasers to photograph the insides of the stomach and oesophagus in detail. It is hoped that this new investigative technique may help spot early signs of cancers of the digestive system, such as oesophageal cancer (also known as cancer of the gullet). The researchers suggest the cancer camera is a quick, simple and pain free imaging method that patients may prefer to ...

Replacing Endoscopy With Pill-Sized Device Could Allow Broader Screening For Esophageal Cancer, Other Conditions
Physicians may soon have a new way to screen patients for Barrett's esophagus, a precancerous condition usually caused by chronic exposure to stomach acid. Researchers at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) have developed an imaging system enclosed in a capsule about the size of a multivitamin pill that creates detailed, microscopic images of the esophageal wall. The system has several advantages over traditional endoscopy... (Source: Health News from Medical News Today)

Could Renal Abscess Be a Complication of Pyelonephritis in this Patient?
Discussion
Urinary tract infections (UTI) are common. By the age of 7 years up to 8% of girls and 2% of boys have had a UTI. The current American Academy of Pediatrics criteria for a UTI diagnosis includes presence of pyruria (determined by microscopy) or leucocyte esterase (on dipstick) AND a culture-positive urine of 100,000 colony-forming units on a voided specimen. Because of possible contamination, bagged specimens are not acceptable. Clinical pyelonephritis (ie febrile UTI) is a fairly common problem in the pediatric population.
Learning Point
Renal abscesses are uncommon with the exact incidence unknown and are defi...

Barrett's Esophagus: A Growing Complication of GERD
Barrett's esophagus is a condition in which the esophagus changes so that some of its lining is replaced by a type of tissue similar to that normally found in the intestine. While there is a higher risk of developing esophageal cancer in people with Barrett's esophagus, less than 1% of patients with Barrett's esophagus will develop this cancer. While the odds of you developing esophageal cancer is low, it is still important that if you were diagnosed with Barrett's esophagus, you should have regular examinations to screen for precancerous and cancerous cells. Examinations can include an upper endoscopic exam and/or biopsy....

Digestive System: GERD
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) develops when a muscle at the end of the esophagus does not close properly. In adults, this causes frequent heartburn, also called acid indigestion. When the esophagus is not fully closed, acidic digestive juices can rise up from the stomach. Refluxed stomach acid in the esophagus causes a burning-type pain in the throat, chest, behind the breast bone, and/or in the mid-abdomen.
