In Vivo HSV-1 DNA Transport Studies Using Murine Retinal Ganglion Cells
We present a method for studying the axonal transport of Herpes simplex virus in mature neurons in situ. Using genetically identical mice and carefully controlling the delivery of virus, an investigator can obtain insight into the transport of virus to and from the neuron cell body within the cellular environment of an intact animal. Long-term contraceptive pill use doubles glaucoma risk, research finds
Women on pill for more than three years 'twice as likely' to develop eye disease that can cause blindness if left untreatedWomen who take the contraceptive pill for more than three years are at twice the risk of glaucoma, a common eye disease that can cause blindness if left untreated, US researchers claim.Doctors behind the study urged women at risk to have regular checks for early signs of the disease, which can usually be treated with eye drops if it is caught in time.Glaucoma is caused by a buildup of fluid pressure in the eye which damages the sensitive optic nerve at the back of the retina. The most common form affec...

Oligomeric proanthocyanidin suppresses the death of retinal ganglion cells
(Neural Regeneration Research) The death of retinal ganglion cells is a hallmark of many optic neurodegenerative diseases such as glaucoma and retinopathy. Oxidative stress is one of the major reasons to cause the cell death. A latest study, published in the Neural Regeneration Research, has shown that grape seed extract can protect retinal ganglion cells against oxidative stress-induced apoptosis. Waking up to the link between a faulty body clock and mental illness | Prof Russell Foster
Biological clocks are known to schedule sleep and changes in alertness, mood, strength and blood pressure, but recent studies suggest they are also deeply involved in mental healthProf Foster delivered a public lecture on "The rhythms of life" at the Physiological Society on Monday. Watch the lecture below Our lives are ruled by time and we use time to tell us what to do. But the digital alarm clock that wakes us in the morning and the wrist-watch that tells us we are late for a meeting are not the clocks I mean. Our biology dances to a profoundly more ancient beat that probably started to tick early in the evolution of al...

Neuron activation induced by cochlear implants improved by new technology
Cochlear implants, electrical prosthetic devices that stimulate inner ear neurons of individuals who have lost their cochlear sensory cells, restore usable hearing to deaf patients. Cochlear implant electrodes are placed in the fluid-filled scala tympani of the cochlea, at a significant distance from the spiral ganglion and even from the spiral ganglion dendrites. Stimulation via a cochlear implant electrode pair is therefore likely to activate large numbers of neurons concurrently... (Source: Health News from Medical News Today)
