The ground-breaking re-banding of health care assistants (HCAs) achieved by UNISON branches in recent months was celebrated by health conference delegates in Bournemouth yesterday, during a busy afternoon of Agenda for Change motions. Campaigns on overtime, reducing the working week and protecting the NHS pension were among the other key topics discussed by delegates. NHS spending over £1m a week on private ambulances for 999 callouts, says UNISON 
The NHS is spending at least £61 million a year – over £1m a week or £167,000 a day – hiring private ambulances to attend emergency calls, says UNISON today (Monday) as its annual health conference opens in Bournemouth. Waiting lists for some procedures in Devon have been cut by converting a Nightingale hospital into a protected elective centre delivering additional orthopaedic, ophthalmology and diagnostic activity. Co-operation between clinicians from different trusts has resulted in innovative ways of working. Bristol healthcare assistants win over £1m in re-banding victory

Hospital staff in Liverpool are coming home
Around 670 staff at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will be brought back in-house on 1 April this year. Staff at two hospital sites, Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen, who work as cleaners, porters, caterers and in other domestic services will be transferred onto NHS terms and conditions once the outsourced contracts come to an end at the end of March.
