Is medicine the career for me?
Hey everyone I was planning to study medicine, but didn't get in. So I went onto a computer science course, however, I dropped out as I disliked the course and the maths too.I am now on a gap year and unsure whether medicine is the right course for me and whether I should re-apply. Pros: I enjoy biology in general, and to some extent interested in body anatomy I am better in biology than in maths I like to say I am a medical student Cons : Medicine course is 5 years, which I feel is long, and in addition to that there are training years. I at times feel squeamish (I noticed this in biology dissection lessons in High ...

Grants for students studying medicine as a second degree
Hi everyone, I've just received a grant from the Leather Sellers Charity to put towards my tuition fees of £9,000 a year. As you know, graduates on 5 year courses do not qualify for a loan from student finance. I have managed to save up a big chunk of the £36K required to be able to study medicine (as the 5th year is paid for by the NHS) but this wasn't enough so I applied to this charity. If you are also struggling to make ends meet, then think about applying here: Educational Awards It won't cover the cost of the whole degree but they offer up to £4,000 a year which is huge really! They have actually asked me to s...

Oxford clinical students
Hi - is anyone a clinical student at Oxford who progressed from the lower deciles? I have 2x merits, 1x resit and have been encouraged to apply straight to London however I wanted to get the perspective of some current students. I'd also like to get some information on the interview process and whether it's possible to change college with less-than-perfect grades! Thanks :) (Source: New Media Medicine)

Oxbridge transfer to London clinical schools
Hi - I am an Oxford student trying to find out what London clinical schools are looking for in transfer students. I am particularly interested in e.g. decile scores and merit/resit counts for applicants to UCL (which seems to only accept students to put them as first choice) and Imperial - as well as the relevance of previous research/extra-curriculars. If anyone could shed light on the interview process at these schools that would be really helpful too! Also, if anyone has experienced the 2nd round/clearing system I would love to get some more information as there isn't much available at the moment. Many thanks! (Sou...

Taking GAMSAT a year early
Hi guys, I am in my first year of undergraduate studies and hoping to apply for graduate entry medicine in September 2016. I know that I will have to take the GAMSAT and as far as I understand GAMSAT results are valid for 2 years. So would I be able to do the GAMSAT in September 2015 when I will be in my second year of Uni, even though I don't apply for medicine until September 2016. Has anyone done this before? Anxiety relief - advice needed
This may be a bit premature of me (as I have just sent my application off) but do any med students/previous applicants have some advice for lowering your anxiety before a med school interview? I want to start working on it now during my early prep because it is quite a big problem for me. I've had a lot of experience in healthcare and I know I'm really good at communicating with patients and healthcare professionals, including really senior ones and in high-pressured situations, so I'd like to think its not a case of 'the interview weeds out those who cant handle it' - I'm also quite chilled out about exams, but the thoug...

Anyone done FY1 in oncology?
Just wondering how people found it, useful? :) Need to send in application for foundation schools this week and as oncology was currently quite high on my list when thinking about the future I thought it may be worth getting some early experience in foundation years. I know it isn't essential and I would hopefully be able to see it in CT1/2 before committing to anything but thought a bit of experience beyond what I saw in Clinical rotation wouldn't go amiss. Doctor's working time
Hello everyone, my girlfriend just started studying medicine, and she's enjoying it so far, but she has a dilemma concerning her future career - it seems to be very hard to combine a doctor's work with personal life. The widespread opinion is that doctors have to work for 60-70 hours a week, and this, to a person like her, who intends to have a family and children, is impossible to attain. The one question I have is - is this opinion true, or maybe it is true in general, but there are some specialities/career options which do not consume so much time and allow for a more liberal work-life balance? In other words, can bein...

Access to medicine after bad A-Level results.
When I say, 'bad A-Level results', I don't mean horribly bad. I mean, I did get into university to study psychology, but rejected the offers after deciding I wasn't giving up on my passion and wanted to pursue a career as a doctor. During my AS year of my a levels, I had various problems and didn't do so well, I continued into A2 anyway and managed to pull my grades to DDE from EUU in my AS year. I got offers from university for a foundation degree in psychology. I rejected the offers almost immediately as I realised I needed to try to pursue my dream in medicine. Now, I have read up on various different access courses,...

I had a lot of problems during my time at uni, I was naive and thought that I could suppress them and still carry on uni as normal. Then I found out about the Open University . I transferred my credits towards a BSc degree from them and hope to graduate next year, hopefully with a 2.1 or a 1st. I was wondering if there is any chance of me applying to medicine. I always wanted to study me...
