Great option for getting started with exercise
This article offers a great way to get started with exercise. We all know exercise is so important for CFers and short, high intensity exercise has been shown to be really beneficial to all kinds of people. The method talked about in this article seems easy to follow, doesn't require special equipment or a gym and could be adapted to all fitness levels. I know I'll be giving this a try on days when I don't make it to the gym. http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/0...have-fun/?_r=0 (Source: Cystic Fibrosis Exercise and Fitness Forum)

help building muscle post lung transplant
So I had a lung transplant in 2004 11 years ago, am 39 now, male, with CF, I feel like Im a good weight considering my size and don't necessarily need to put on any more just general weight but do want to put on some muscle weight. Can anyone direct me to a good routine of getting into? I do have some dumbbells and weight bench, which I occasionally do but need a good plan on getting more muscle in my arms and legs. Or maybe some of you with CF who work with weights can give me some insight on doing this. Thanks (Source: Cystic Fibrosis Exercise and Fitness Forum)

Exercise or Albuteral - Similar Effects
Interesting article on the benefits of exercise for CFers. It contains links to recent research comparing moderate exercise to the effects of albuteral. One of the things I found most interesting though was the researchers recommendations for moderate exercise compared to light exercise or intense workouts. Bottom line seems to point to improved longevity, increased lung function and increase quality of life when your lifestyle includes sustained moderate exercise. Battling CF kyphosis
What are you experiences in improving structural CF related kyphosis? Have you been able to regain mobility in your thoracic spine? After a long period of malnutrition and sickness in my teens, my spine and posture were pretty bad leading into my 20's. My posture and muscular strength have improved a lot since then. Problem is my spine itself. It has the typical CF curvature combined with barrel chest which makes it seem optically worse. (Same as my sister and a lot of CF'ers my age, it seems.) My spine is pretty stubborn. Months ago I purchased a foam roller to aid muscle recovery, fight aches, pains and improve mob...

I got chest x rays and the tech let me see. I noticed more lung scarring, although, I was a tad confused with everything because it didn't look a whole like my last chest X-ray. Exercise as a treatment
I am 20 and feel like I have tried everything my doctors have asked of me. The vest has been a problem for me. I absolutely hate the vest, I hate feeling restricted, I hate sitting still, I hate the way I felt during the treatment. Now I understand that there are benefits of the vest, I do. However, I think we all have that one thing we just really hate, mine just happens to be a vest. Making exercise a habit
This NYTimes mini article is about making exercise a habit. In the comment section that follows the article, there are all sorts of interesting and inspirational ideas. I think people with CF tend to develop tremendous discipline because of their treatment regimens, so a lot of the talk of making a commitment and following through might seem basic. But I still think this article/the comments give good ideas for how different people to find the right activity or right approach for making exercise a habit (...realizing that at the lower levels of lung function, activities of daily living ARE exercise). http://well.blogs.n...

What does your CF Clinic say re Exercise
I'm cross posting in case some folks look only at forums and not for latest posts: I'm wondering what different CF tell patients re exercise. Obviously it is good, but do your Centers: 1) Give specifics of what types to do and how long, like they do for nutrition (eat so many calories a day), so say exercise 20 minutes per day, jogging or stairmaster? 2) Do they ever tell you not to exercise because of weight loss and a need to preserve weight? 3) Does this change as the kids get older?? I really want to become CF healthy

But I really want to get healthy in terms of my lungs. I'm at a good weight (and my doctors have given me the 'go head' sign to lose, at most, 10 lb.). yoga breathing
a little while back someone told me something about some type of breathing, I think associated with a certain yoga style, through which some guy has increased his lung capacity to three times what is average. For some reason I wasn't paying much attention at the time.I know capacity isn't really a problem with cf, but I also think it may help in some ways. Interval Training proven safe and beneficial for people with severe CF disease
Conclusion The present study showed that IT is an exercise training method which is safe in patients with CF who are unable to participate in SEP. IT is less time consuming than SEP (Standard Exercise Program'and patients perceived IT as less strenuous compared to constant workload. Compared to SEP, IT improved submaximal exercise capacity to a greater extent than SEP, whereas responsiveness of maximal exercise capacity was higher in the SEP. Overall this seems to indicate a specific potential for positive peripheral muscular adaptations in spite of minimal or diminishing potential of pulmonary improvement. From a practica...

How to keep salt out of your eyes?
My husband has cystic fibrosis. Whenever he spends the day outside in the warmer months, or even in the colder months if he is active, he ends up with red irritated eyes for days from the salt dripping in his eyes all day. This makes him not want to spend so much time doing stuff together as a family or exercising because he knows it will make his eyes burn. Is there anything you have been able to find to help with this problem? It makes him just want to hide in the house all Summer when I'd really rather we could be out doing things as a family. Question about health and body fat
Hello everyone, I've recently discovered about this forum and decided to give it a go. Anyways, I'm 19 years old and have CF. I've started going to the gym regulary (5-6 days a week) the past few months with the goal to acheive low body fat and build some muscles. Now, I'm at around 12% body fat and would like to go down to around 8% body fat to have more defined muscles. My parents are being parents and are worried about health issues. Question is, does having such low body fat can damage somehow my lung function or overall health? Thanks. (Source: Cystic Fibrosis Exercise and Fitness Forum)
