Attending subspecialty conferences during intern year?
I matched into psychiatry for the incoming 2024 cohort starting in July. I have long wanted to pursue forensic psychiatry even during undergrad, and I can see that while fellowships in general are not competitive, the more "prestigious" programs are getting more selective over time. My program is not a big academic center and not terribly well known. It isn't exactly rural or community, but its also not in a major urban area and there won't be many resources for me to get a lot of forensic... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Didn't get chief resident spot. How upset should I be? Interested in Forensics
From everything I've read on here and reddit is that chief resident spot is the most overrated, extra-work you can take on for little CV benefit. Regardless I came to the decision to apply for our spot. I had no incentive previously, but recently significant other took a job at a location that has a forensic fellowship. I figured taking a chief spot could bolster the resume and give some extra responsibilities. The program I am in is not too intense. Ended up applying and found out... Opposition to Proposed CACREP Mandate in Georgia
A bill was just introduced in Georgia that would make graduates from five Master's programs in the state unable to become licensed as Professional Counselors. This bill would do two major things. First, it would ban anyone who doesn't have a degree from a CACREP program from becoming licensed as a Counselor, and second it would allow LPCs to perform any kind of psychological testing, including neuropsychological and forensic assessments. As many of you all know, CACREP bans Psychologists... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Nontraditional student -- best options?
As the title says, I'm a nontraditional student. I got an AA in Psychology and a BA in Criminal Justice with a minor in psychology before entering the military, where I worked law enforcement primarily. I was medically discharged from the military after 4 years, and now I'm at a crossroads. I had two backup ideas as I was leaving the military: digital forensics and forensic psychology. I went with the former because I thought it would be less competitive. I'm halfway through an MS in Digital... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Derm vs. Path
Interested in dermpath. I enjoy general surg path/cyto more than derm clinic, but I don't mind clinic. I have no interest in CP or autopsy/forensics. I have enough of a base to put myself into the conversation for derm (top quartile class rank, top quartile step 2, did a post-sophomore fellowship at a T10 path program, personally know some academic dermpaths with some connections). However, I would have to go hard from a research/extracurricular standpoint to really be competitive; I would... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Help- forensics? lying PD
Hi all. I am wondering if anyone can help at all. I had a vindictive PD lie about me to the DOH. It is incredibly obvious to anyone in psychiatry if they read the report that the PD lied, but I am needing to find someone to help call it out to the DOH. Lawyer told me I can't just say the PD is lying and that someone else has to say it. I don't know if I need a forensic psychiatrist or what. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you so much in advance. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Forensic Fellowship Timeline
I'm interested in forensics but cannot figure out what the timeline is. It seems like in the past, it was more of a free for all and residents would apply in the spring of 3rd year. Now, it seems like it's more structured with specific dates as far as when programs can review applications, offer interviews and when an acceptance can be offered, as put out by the ADFPF. Reading through some of the posts over the past few years though, it seems like programs don't really stick to those... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

California makes forensic path P.C.
California, with the blessing of the CAP, has now made it ILLEGAL to use the term “excited delirium” on a death certificate or in an autopsy report because it is “racially charged”, as of 1Jan 24. I have an effective and concise work-around: “human being (no race or gender problem) who was physical-mass-challenged at 150 kg (can’t say obese) who was expressing their rights (can’t we all) by enjoying methamphetamine and experiencing tachycardia (225 b.p.m.) and systolic blood pressure of... Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship
Hello I am interested in applying to a forensic psychiatry fellowship. I did not get much experience in my general residency and only had experience at the Juvenile Justice System for my CAP fellowship. During fellowship it was more clinical exposure than forensics per se. I always had an interest in psychiatry and the law, attended UC Davis: CAP and the Law series of case conferences (which were amazing) and it wasn't until the tail end of my CAP fellowship that I decided to apply for the... I'm a junior. How do I get ready to apply to clinical psych Phd programs?
Hi everyone! The title says it all. For reference, I have a 3.95 GPA at a competitive university. I tend to do well on standardized tests as well. As far as clinical experience goes, I've both volunteered at a substance abuse clinic and shadowed a forensic psychologist at a psychiatric hospital. As far as research experience goes, I spend about 20 hours a week (sometimes more) working in two labs. I run experiments for an animal behavior lab that studies the acute effects of nicotine on... Recent NPsych Listserv Post Annoyed Me
As the title says, a recent post to the NPsych listserv annoyed me. The post is an important and valid one regarding test security in California. Yet one of the author's points that supposedly speaks to the urgency of the matter was annoying. To quote: "...However, the urgency grows each day. Defense attorneys are desperate to find experts who will agree to the demands and have started reaching out to newly licensed, non-boarded neuropsychologists with no forensic experience." The explicit... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

VCU vs Emory vs MUSC vs UTSW vs UAB? Forensic pathology
I know I’m probably super early, I’ve still got a little less than 3 years before I do any applying. But I want to know what school is best for my goals so I can work towards their requirements. Sorry for the long list. VCU: Pros: -forensic pathology fellowship offered at medical examiners office -highly regarded in forensic science -prestigious status in research (will help with residency matching and job applications) -wonderful area -great pathology programs...
