‘Once in a generation opportunity to put younger workers at the heart of our union’
Delegates at UNISON’s health conference today welcomed moves to better recruit, represent and include young members. As Shipha Begum of the Young Members Forum (above) told the conference: “We’re not the future of the union – we’re right here, right now, getting active, getting organised and building the union. “And we want to make sure that all our colleagues in the NHS and across the health sector are right beside us.” The TUC has highlighted the fact that less than 8% of workers aged 16-24 are in a union, while almost 40% of union members are aged 50 or over. Like the TUC, UNISO...

AFG taking a big cut from funding it receives
As UNISON members at Alternative Futures Group (AFG) take a third day of strike action today, the union has released figures that reveal that AFG’s raid on staff incomes is unnecessary. The company has cut care support workers’ top-up payments pay for sleep-in shifts. This is costing some staff as much as £2,000 a year. The care support workers are only paid at the level of the minimum wage for their regular hours and many are struggling to stay in the care sector due to not being paid adequately at night. Staff have received great support for their strike action, with a public petition hitting some 13,00...

The problems we face every day
UNISON health delegates have passed a series of motions on serious but sometimes little discussed issues that affect their daily working lives. These included bullying, the menopause, mandatory flu vaccinations and hospital food. Bullying. Conference heard that bullying in the NHS is “endemic”, “institutionalised” and can be seen at every level – by ministers towards civil servants, to organisations like NHS Improvement and NHS England making unreasonable demands on trusts, down through every layer of management until it hits frontline staff. The 2017 NHS staff survey found that one in four NH...

Delegates at UNISON’s health conference took part in a wide-ranging debate on what is regarded as the under-funded and overworked “Cinderella” service of the NHS. As a result, 45% of respondents to a UNISON survey have said they are thinking of leaving their jobs. Government must pay up to end growing NHS pay divide, says UNISON
The government must find the money to ensure tens of thousands of low-paid cleaners, porters, security guards and catering staff working for private contractors in hospitals across England receive the same pay rise as colleagues employed by the NHS, says UNISON today (Sunday). The lowest paid workers in the NHS were given a £2,000 pay rise last year, as part of a three-year deal negotiated by health unions. But the overwhelming majority of health staff employed on private contracts have not received a penny, says UNISON. Many outsourced staff haven’t had a wage rise in years and the growing pay divide is affect...

Responding to the transfer of more than 700 staff at Chesterfield Royal Hospital Trust to a new private arm’s-length company this week, UNISON head of health Sara Gorton said: “This is bad news for staff and patients. The changes are built on savings from employing new recruits on worse pay, conditions and pension scheme, as well as slashing the trust’s VAT liability. “The money will almost certainly not go into the pockets of staff, who need it most. New charter sets out role for volunteers in supporting the NHS
A pioneering charter showing how volunteers can make a valuable contribution to the NHS in England, without undermining paid staff or affecting patient safety, is being launched today (Thursday) by health unions and Helpforce. The aim is to ensure that the tens of thousands of people who give up their time to provide comfort and help to patients are given guidance about their roles. It’s also intended to safeguard against their use as cheap substitutes for trained health staff. There are an estimated 78,000 volunteers providing help and support to patients in hospitals across England. This might include running book ...

Blog: Fighting for a real Living Wage for all, 20 years on from the National Minimum Wage
Twenty years ago today, the National Minimum Wage (NMW) came into force. For the first time, there was a legal wage floor below which working people should never fall. Today, it’s easy to take that change for granted, but it was the result of decades of campaigning from the trade union movement – particularly UNISON and our predecessor unions – often in the face of opposition from Conservative politicians, employers and even some within the trade union movement. Fighting for the National Minimum Wage was a passion I shared with our much-missed friend Rodney Bickerstaffe, who played such a pivotal role ove...

Tuberculosis – making sure you don ’ t have latent TB
World Tuberculosis Day, on Sunday 24 March, is a time when we remember that tuberculosis (TB) is the world’s leading cause of death from an infectious disease. It kills more people than HIV and malaria combined. But TB is not just a problem in the developing world and the UK has some of the highest rates in Western Europe. Most people who breathe in TB bacteria do not immediately become unwell, but have strong enough immune systems to clear the bacteria or otherwise hold it in a ‘sleeping’ state known as latent TB. In fact, a quarter of the world’s population has latent TB, with a 10% chance of it &...

Environment Agency staff vote on strike action over pay
The threat of industrial action is looming at the Environment Agency after it decided to force a below inflation pay rise on its 10,000 staff earlier this year, says UNISON today (Thursday). UNISON is asking Environment Agency staff whether they would be prepared take industrial action to try to win a better wage rise than the 1.3% that’s been imposed on them. Since 2010 staff have faced a 20% real-terms pay cut. UNISON says staff working for the agency are understandably angry, especially as the increase is way below that given to other public sector workers. In all of our communities, UNISON members work tirelessly to provide public services. Often unseen, it’s our people who keep our country going. That’s certainly the case for the vital workers in the Environment Agency. They have the vital roles of protecting towns and villages up and down the country from flooding, and preventing environmental pollution. Yet since 2010, they’ve faced 20% real terms pay cuts as a result of the government’s disastrous pay policy – similar to so many others across the public sector.
