Toxic responses of environmental concentrations of bifenthrin in larval freshwater snail Bellamya aeruginosa
In this study, larval B. aeruginosa within 24 h of birth were exposed to 0, 30 or 300 ng/L of BF for 30 days, and then the toxic effects from molecular to individual levels were comprehensively evaluated in all the three treatment groups. It was found that BF at 300 ng/L caused the mortality of snails. Furthermore, BF affected snail behaviors, evidenced by reduced crawling distance and crawling speed. The hepatopancreas of snails in the two BF exposure groups showed significant pathological changes, including increase in the number of yellow granules and occurrence of hemocyte infiltration, epithelial cell thinning, and ne...

Antibacterial activity of a short de novo designed peptide against fish bacterial pathogens
Amino Acids. 2024 Apr 5;56(1):28. doi: 10.1007/s00726-024-03388-4.ABSTRACTIn the face of increasing antimicrobial resistance in aquaculture, researchers are exploring novel substitutes to customary antibiotics. One potential solution is the use of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). We aimed to design and evaluate a novel, short, and compositionally simple AMP with potent activity against various bacterial pathogens in aquaculture. The resulting peptide, KK12YW, has an amphipathic nature and net charge of + 7. Molecular docking experiments disclosed that KK12YW has a strong affinity for aerolysin, a virulence protein produced b...

Fish - a scoping review for Nordic Nutrition Recommendations 2023
Food Nutr Res. 2024 Mar 5;68. doi: 10.29219/fnr.v68.10485. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTThe aim of this scoping review was to conduct evidence-based documentation between fish intake and health outcomes for food-based dietary guidelines (FBDGs) in the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations (NNR) 2023. For most health outcomes, the evidence for fish oil and n-3 long chain (LC) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) supplementation was included when examining evidence between fish intake and health. In this review, conclusions from qualified systematic reviews (qSR) approved by NNR2023 are included. In addition, conclusions of a de novo s...

Iodine status and determinants in adults in Norway - results from a population-based health examination survey (The HUNT Study)
CONCLUSION: Iodine status was adequate in older adults but mildly deficient in adults under 55 years. Milk intake, supplement use and use of thyroid medication are important determinants of iodine intake in Norway.PMID:38571917 | PMC:PMC10989228 | DOI:10.29219/fnr.v68.9761 (Source: Food and Nutrition Research)

IDEAL: Maintaining PHC-focused training in a MBChB programme through a COVID-induced innovation
Afr J Prim Health Care Fam Med. 2024 Mar 11;16(1):e1-e3. doi: 10.4102/phcfm.v16i1.4389.ABSTRACTResponding to the need for authentic clinical training for students in the context of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the Stellenbosch University Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences developed an innovative 12-week longitudinal, integrated rotation for pre-final-year medical students, the Integrated Distributed Engagement to Advance Learning (IDEAL) rotation. This saw 252 students being placed across 30 primary and secondary healthcare facilities in the Western and Northern Cape provinces. With a focus on service learning...

Relation of preconception eating behaviours to dietary pattern trajectories and gestational weight gain from preconception to late pregnancy
Appetite. 2024 Apr 2:107336. doi: 10.1016/j.appet.2024.107336. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStudies examining preconception eating behaviours with longitudinal dietary patterns from preconception to late pregnancy as well as gestational weight gain (GWG) are limited. We derived dietary pattern trajectories from preconception to late-pregnancy, and related preconception eating behaviours to these trajectories and GWG. Preconception eating behaviours were assessed using the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire measuring cognitive restraint (CR) - conscious restriction of food intake, emotional eating (EE) - overeating in respo...
