Endangered Species and Morality
Randal O'TooleTwo weeks ago, the Fish&  Wildlife Service proposed to declare23 endangered species, including theivory ‐billed woodpecker, to be extinct. Since the woodpecker had been sighted as recently as 2006 and many hold out hope that it survives, the agency ’s proposal seems to be more of an attempt to gain support (and funding) for its programs. The bald eagle was in danger of extinction in 1973, when the Endangered Species Act was passed, and now has healthy populations in 49 states. Yet the Endangered Species Act probably was not the primary reason for its recovery.Photo by Andy Morflew. This makes i...

Business as Usual: U.S. Arms Sales and Civilian Casualties in Nigeria
A. Trevor Thrall andJordan CohenThe Reuters news service reported Wednesday that the Nigerian Air Forcebombed a fish market, murdering more than fifty civilians. At best, this incident was the latest example of the Nigerian military ’s lethal disregard for civilians as it pursues its campaignagainst the terrorist group, Boko Haram. At worst, this might have been another case of the government targeting supporters of its political opposition. Last month, Nigerian security forces killed115 people in a fight against separatist agitators who were peacefully protesting the government ’s lack of progress against SA...

The global digital health market continues its boom: with spectacular growth, it could reach $ 660bn by 2025. Investors have poured an unprecedented amount of money into healthcare in 2020, reaching a record-setting year for digital health. Seafood Company Hit with Jones Act Penalties over Railroad to Nowhere
Colin GrabowIn a  saner world, sending frozen fish from Alaska to the East Coast would be a relatively simple undertaking. Fish or other types of seafood would be placed onto ships in Alaska and dispatched to the other side of the country for unloading and eventual transport to consumers. But domestic water transp ortation is subject to theJones Act, which means this process is not so straightforward. Ships both capable of handling items requiring cold storage and compliant with the law ’s strictures are expensive and few in number. And none operate regularly scheduled service from Alaska to destinations beyond the Wes...

Post #57 All Encompassing COVID Scenario Chart
This updated chart should help families know what to do for almost any COVID scenario. The Low-Risk vs High-Risk chart is a BLUE FISH concept and it is NOT from the CDC. Because of the abundance of other viruses out there, we have found it far more helpful to use this criteria to help delineate those we consider " presumed " cases. The conservative thing to do is to consider even one Low-Risk symptom COVID until otherwise proven. Of course testing can always help as well. (Source: A Pediatrician's Blog)

BathMy 10 year old son lies supine in a bath without bubbles. His lithe white body like a mullet fish in the lagoon floats fragile in dull gray waters. His shins are like champagne glasses.  His wiener sways and strains for the surface like a blade of ocean kelp.  Here ’s your towel, man, I say.  He ’s dipped his ears beneath the surface so he can’t hear what I’m saying.  Or at least plausibly deny. Underwater we only hear with our skull.  Everything echoes.  Each sound takes its turn.  What did I even say.  I ’d forgotten the towel.  I ’m not even there. ...

Here ’s Why We Believe That Beautiful Animals Are More Deserving Of Our Protection
By Emma Young Do you think a ladybird is more beautiful than a locust? If you do, you probably also feel that the ladybird is “purer” than the locust, and this leads you to believe that it possesses more inherent moral worth. This, at least, is the conclusion of a new paper that inextricably links perceptions of purity, beauty, and moral standing for people as well as animals, and even landscapes and buildings. Earlier studies have found that the more we feel an entity has a mind, and is capable of sensations and feelings, the greater its moral standing — that is, we think that there is a stronger ...

Wednesday Bible Study: Torah Shmorah
I noted previously that the tabernacle and the altar as the center of religious and communal life have disappeared. You no longer have to go there with your sacrifices for the Kohanite priests to carry out. Now it ' s official: you can rent your own priest and have your own personal altar and sacrifices. (To be fully explicated in the following chapter, but the story starts here in Judges 17.) Not only that, but remember the whole thing about idols and graven images? E.g.:Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath.Ex...
