The Macro View – Health, Economics, and Politics and the Big Picture. What I Am Watching Here And Abroad.
The objective most consistent with recent operations is to conquer Luhansk, Donetsk, and Kherson, with a view to their eventual annexation and Russification. But not only are they some way from achieving that (w ith much of Donetsk still in Ukrainian hands and the Russia position in Kherson highly contested) it would also require an explicit Ukrainian surrender for it to serve as the basis for a declaration of victory. That will not be forthcoming.-----https://www.afr.com/world/europe/how-britain-giggled-its-way-into-crisis-20220710-p5b0giHow Britain giggled its way into crisisBoris Johnson has exposed the costs of Britain...

The Macro View – Health, Economics, and Politics and the Big Picture. What I Am Watching Here And Abroad.
July 14, 2022 Edition-----The biggest news this week was the assassination of the ex-PM of Japan – Shinzo Abe – who was a good friend to OZ incidentally. In the US we have had a wind-up to a busy summit season – NATO etc – and the ongoing war in Ukraine which is becoming a deepening, protracted and horrible situation which it seems hard to resolve sadly. In the UK Boris is out but not gone and the battle for the succession is off and rolling. In OZ we have Albo back and we need to work out what to mitigate these various natural disasters and actually get on with it!!!! The response has been pathetic so far I reckon!--...

Alcohol Use Disorder in the API Community
Asian-American Pacific Islanders, also known as the API Community, are one of the fastest-growing minority groups in America. Due to model minority stereotypes and a lack of empirical data, the API community has been thought to have lower than expected rates of substance use disorders and behavioral addictions. However, alcohol use disorder in the API Community still exists, and it presents its own set of unique issues compared to other ethnicities and communities. These can include specific risk factors and barriers to treatment that other groups do not face. What is the API Community? In 1968, the term “Asian Amer...

Liz Parrish and BioViva, a Chapter in the Telomerase Gene Therapy Book
As a part of efforts to push forward the treatment of aging as a medical condition, Liz Parrish underwent telomerase and follistatin gene therapies a few years ago. She formed a company, BioViva Sciences, to follow through. Self-experimentation is the most ethical of all possible ways proceed from animal studies to human studies, and is unfairly slandered in this day and age. There is a long history of notable researchers first testing their work on themselves. Self-experimentation must be followed through by success in business, fundraising, research and development, however - the areas in which all too many initiatives...

This South Pacific island will change how you think about health care
For the last several weeks, I have been working as a medical volunteer on a remote island off the coast of Fiji called Batiki. Home to 234 natives, Batiki has no running water, and no electricity (other than solar generated power). The inhabitants are subsistence fishermen and farmers. They are filled with joy and a real sense of community. While on the island, I found extremely high rates of high blood pressure and moderate rates of type 2 diabetes, but overall, I found a very happy and healthy indigenous population. Previous research has shown that the South Pacific islands have the second highest rates of type 2 diabete...

This study expands on the idea that loss of Y, already a known risk factor for cancer, could be a predictive biomarker for a wider range of poor health outcomes, specifically Alzheimer's. Why loss of Y can be linked to an increased risk for disease remains unclear, but the authors speculate it has to do with reduced immune system performance. The researchers looked at over 3,000 men to ascertain whether there was any predictive association between loss of Y in blood cells and Alzheimer's disease. The participants came from three long-term studies that could provide regular blood samples: the European Alzheimer's Dis...

Bill Andrews of Sierra Sciences Announces Collaboration with BioViva
At a recent conference, Bill Andrews of Sierra Sciences announced a forthcoming collaboration with BioViva, currently pushing regulatory boundaries to develop gene therapies as treatments for aging. A new company will be formed, BioViva Fiji, to offer gene therapies that can compensate for some of the aspects of degenerative aging via medical tourism in Fiji. The principle focus, given that this is Sierra Sciences we are talking about here, is telomerase gene therapy, but BioViva is also working on a follistatin gene therapy, and it is worth bearing in mind that in this age of CRISPR rolling out any single target gene ther...
