Lawrence Brown obituary
As an x-ray crystallographer from the late 1940s onwards, my father, Lawrence Brown, who has died aged 95, was one of a select band of British scientists who helped to determine the atomic and molecular structure of crystals. He put the knowledge he gained to good use in the then growing field of synthetic fibres, particularly with the textile company Courtaulds, where he rose to become head of its acetate and synthetic fibres laboratory. There he oversaw work on the development of several new synthetic fibres, including carbon fibre.Continue reading... (Source: Guardian Unlimited Science)

Diet might help you wave goodbye to painful periods
Period pain can be a total nightmare when the time of the month comes round and it would be great if we could just wave goodbye to painful periods. They’re so common that most women don’t seek treatment – it’s just part of being a woman. However there are ways to improve the situation, starting with a healthy diet. According to research, women with very painful periods have more inflammatory prostaglandins, which cause pain. So if you focus on consuming foods that reduce inflammation, this can reduce the pain. First you should avoid foods that increase inflammatory prostaglandins, such as fried food...

One man ’s mission to conquer space
Rocket Lab entrepreneur Peter Beck ’s recent launch into orbit of Humanity Star drew a barrage of flak. But he remains undauntedLast month, from its base in New Zealand, Peter Beck ’s space company, Rocket Lab, conducted its first successful attempt to put satellites in orbit. The launch vehicle, the Electron, carried a payload including the Humanity Star, a very shiny, 65-sided, carbon-fibre satellite whose only function is to reflect the sunlight as it spins. Scientists di dn’t approve: astronomers claimed it would interfere with their observations, others called it “space graffiti”, while theScientific America...
