The Itchy, Bumpy Blues: How to Treat and Prevent Mosquito Bites and Related Conditions
Mosquito bites may be a nuisance, but fortunately, in the U.S., they tend to amount to nothing more than that. Upon being bitten, most Americans experience a bit of swelling and itchiness, and nothing more. However, there are exceptions to this, including stronger allergic reactions to bites and cases of mosquito-borne illness.  Insect and arachnid bites, including ticks, account for approximately 2,000 cases of malaria and 30,000 cases of Lyme disease in the U.S. annually. In addition, millions of people worldwide die of malaria each year. It is helpful to protect yourself against insect bites, not only to avoid pesk...

Wilding our gardens with Seedball
A nice big package has arrived from the lovely people at Seedball. As I mentioned previously I am hoping to wild two patches of our front and back gardens to provide a couple of localised ecosystems for invertebrates, such as bees, butterflies, and moths and also to invest in those for the sake of the bats and birds. Indeed, the various mixes that have arrived after discussions with Seedball are their bee mix, butterfly mix, shade mix, and a bat mix. Each has a wonderful mix wildflower seeds in their clay seed ball system that one simply spreads over the surface of a roughly prepared patch of soil (or in tubs). The balls h...

Trapping moths at night
Natural history book seller NHBS Ltd also sells moth traps similar to the Robinson-type trap my friend Rob built way-back-when (2006, actually). I’ve sited his homemade trap in my garden in the hope of seeing a few creatures of the night in the morning. Of course, this process is one of scientific observation and interest, we’re not trapping them to kill them, once caught and observed they are released back into the wild of the back garden. Meanwhile, the NHBS blog – The Hoopoe – has a few tips on setting up and using a trap, which I’ve cribbed and adapted below. Buff Ermine moth Site your tr...

NaturOli Restorative Skin Repair Cream – Look at the Label
This “100% natural” skin moisturizer is a top seller on Amazon.com this week. Let’s look at the label to see how natural it really is. Color us skeptical but most product that claim to be all-natural typically end up with hidden synthetic ingredients. So imagine our surprise to see that NaturOli lives up to its name better than most we have seen. The good and bad of natural As you can see from the ingredient list below all of the oil-based ingredients are derived from plant sources such as olives, avocados and sesame seeds. It also uses an amino acid derived preservative rather than the typical formaldeh...

Unexpected illumination
Nothing ever goes away until it teaches us what we need to know runs one of the quotes above my desk. It’s been running through my brain, too, ever since the another-five-years-of-Tamoxifen bombshell. I’ve been wondering what I’ve not learned. (For the rationalists among you: I do recognise the sound scientific basis for another five years of tamoxifen, and that the entire universe is not really bending to teach me a lesson. But I am still prepared to learn one, if there’s one there.) While I tried to figure out The Lesson, I went to see my GP, and explained that if I was doing this for another 5 ye...

Does taking supplements help IVF patients ?
Practically all women doing IVF are taking supplements of one sort or another ! These are supposed to improve egg yield, egg quality and embryo implantation , thus helping to improve IVF pregnancy rates.  I have come across women who take over 10 different supplements daily – and I wonder how they manage to swallow so many different tablets, syrups and capsules in a day ! On second thoughts thought,  it is not surprising , because the craving for a baby can make a woman move heaven and earth; which means taking umpteen supplements is not such a difficult task to accomplish. I have heard the following qu...

Nuvosa Skin Care: In the Beauty Brains Bathroom
Can I tell you how sick and tired I am of hearing anti-aging claims from companies that don’t provide ANY data to back up what they say? That’s why it was so refreshing to find that the samples of Nuvosa skin care that I received were accompanied by actual test data showing how well their products work. If you aren’t familiar with Nuvosa, they offer  a Deep Wrinkle Remedy, a Reborn Moisturizer and a Flawless Toner. You can learn more here at Nuvosa.com. Nuvosa test data According to their data, at the end of a 28 day study here’s what the women said: 94%  agreed  skin  is  hydrated. 90%  of ...
