Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances inhibit human and rat 17 β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 1: Quantitative structure-activity relationship and molecular docking analysis
In conclusion, PFAS exhibit inhibitory effects on human and rat 17β-HSD1 depending on factors such as carbon chain length, degree of fluorination, and the presence of carboxylic acid or sulfonic acid groups, with a notable V-shaped shift observed at C11.PMID:38452703 | DOI:10.1016/j.ecoenv.2024.116173 (Source: Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety)

Letrozole induced a polycystic ovary syndrome model in zebrafish by interfering with the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis
This study compared the traits of zebrafish with three diagnostic criteria for human PCOS, and the diagnostic criteria for zebrafish PCOS were proposed: decreased fecundity, elevated testosterone (T) or 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) levels and increased cortical-alveolar oocyte (CO) ratio, enhancing the zebrafish PCOS model's accuracy. According to the mammalian PCOS classification, the type of zebrafsh PCOS is divided into four phenotypes (A, B, C and D), but the four phenotypes of zebrafish PCOS are not fully covered in the existing studies (A and D). In this study, we successfully induced phenotype B zebrafish PCOS model ...

Low dose of propyl-pyrazole-triol, an agonist of estrogen receptor alpha, administration stimulates the Coolidge effect in fadrozole-treated male rats
Horm Behav. 2024 Mar 5;161:105520. doi: 10.1016/j.yhbeh.2024.105520. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEstrogen receptor (ER) α is involved in male sexual function. Here, we aim to investigate how ERα activation influences sexual satiety and the Coolidge effect (i.e., when a rat, that has reached sexual satiety, experiences an increased arousal after exposure to a novel sexual partner) in estrogen-deprived male rats. Male rats (8 per group) were treated daily for 29 days with either saline (Control group) or fadrozole dissolved in saline (1 mg/kg/day) 1 h before mating. On Days 13 and 29, rats treated with fadrozole received...

Thyroid-stimulating hormone levels are associated with estradiol levels and impact reproductive outcomes in preconceptionally euthyroid women undergoing their first IVF/ICSI cycles
CONCLUSION(S): Serum TSH levels change significantly during COH and are associated with significant changes in estradiol levels. However, euthyroid women with high-normal TSH levels showed similar development potential for inseminated embryos and early reproductive outcomes compared to those with low TSH levels.PMID:38443586 | DOI:10.1007/s42000-024-00538-x (Source: Hormones)

Mechanisms of adverse mammary effect induced by olanzapine and therapeutic interventions in rat model
CONCLUSIONS: These results shed light on the previously overlooked effect of olanzapine on mammary development and present experimental evidence to support current clinical management strategies of antipsychotic induced side effects in the breast.PMID:38437955 | DOI:10.1016/j.taap.2024.116876 (Source: Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology)

Assessment of occurrence, partitioning and ecological risk for 144 steroid hormones in Taihu Lake using UPLC-MS/MS with machine learning model
In this study, we developed a highly sensitive analytical method for the simultaneous quantification of 144 SHs to investigate their occurrence, spatial distribution and partitioning in the water and sediment in Taihu Lake. The results showed that the total concentrations of SHs in water and sediment were 366.88-998.23 ng/L (mean: 612.84 ng/L) and 17.46-150.20 ng/g (mean: 63.41 ng/g), respectively. The spatial distribution of SHs in Taihu Lake might be simultaneously influenced by the pollution sources, lake hydrodynamics, and sediment properties. The sediment-water partitioning result implied that 28 SHs were in dynamic e...

Reference data on estrogen metabolome in healthy pregnancy
CONCLUSION: We concluded that (1) the levels of estrogen compounds and metabolites increase with advancing gestational age; (2) the wide ranges of levels challenge the establishment of a healthy reference range for clinical purposes; (3) 17-beta-estradiol is not conjugated significantly; (4) 4-methylation and 17-epimerization pathways of estrogens are negligible with our LC-MS/MS method.PMID:38432490 | DOI:10.1016/j.mcp.2024.101953 (Source: Molecular Medicine)

Multiple treatments with human embryonic stem cell-derived mesenchymal progenitor cells preserved the fertility and ovarian function of perimenopausal mice undergoing natural aging
CONCLUSIONS: Multiple introductions of hESC-MPCs could be a useful approach to prevent female reproductive senescence and that these cells are promising sources for cell therapy to postpone the ovarian aging and retain fecundity in perimenopausal women.PMID:38433223 | DOI:10.1186/s13287-024-03684-6 (Source: Cell Research)

The effect of gonadal hormones on the gene expression of brain-pituitary in protandrous black porgy, Acanthopagrus schlegelii
In this study, we conducted short-term sex steroid treatment and surgery of gonadectomy to evaluate the feedback regulation between the gonads and the brain. The qPCR results show that male phase had the highest gths transcripts; treatment with estradiol-17β (E2) or 17α-methyltestosterone (MT) resulted in the increased pituitary lhb trnscripts. After surgery, apart from gnrh1, there is no difference in brain signaling genes between gonadectomy and sham fish. In the diencephalon/mesencephalon transcriptome, de novo assembly generated 283,528 unigenes; however, only 443 (0.16%) genes showed differentially expressed between...
