Brown Adipose Tissue Metabolism in Women is Dependent on Ovarian Status
Am J Physiol Endocrinol Metab. 2024 Mar 13. doi: 10.1152/ajpendo.00077.2024. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn rodents, loss of estradiol (E2) reduces brown adipose tissue (BAT) metabolic activity. Whether E2 impacts BAT activity in women is not known. BAT oxidative metabolism was measured in premenopausal (N=27, 35±9 years, body mass index (BMI) = 26.0±5.3 kg/m2) and postmenopausal (N=25, 51±8 years, BMI = 28.0±5.0 kg/m2) women at room temperature (RT) and during acute cold exposure using [11C]-acetate with positron emission tomography coupled with computed tomography (PET/CT). BAT glucose uptake was also measured duri...

Analysing and quantifying chronic stress ‐associated endogenous steroids in hair samples
This study presents the development and validation of a method for the analysis of steroids in hair samples. The method was fully validated for seven steroids, and one steroid (estradiol) can be semi-quantitative analysed. Ten representative samples from an explorative study on adolescents are included in the present study. AbstractIn previous studies, various steroids have been associated with stress and have therefore been quantified to investigate stress-related questions. Since the main stress-related steroid cortisol follows a circadian rhythm, often hair is analysed to quantify this steroid. Further, hair analysis gi...

Sex differences on constitutive long non ‐coding RNA expression: Modulatory effect of estradiol and testosterone in muscle cells
ConclusionsTaken together, results obtained evidenced sex differences on constitutive long non-coding RNA expression and suggested an influence of steroid hormones complementary to other possible factors. These findings emphasize the importance of including both sexes in experimental design to minimize any potential sex bias. (Source: Andrology)

Estrogen promotes fetal skeletal muscle mitochondrial distribution and ATP synthase activity important for insulin sensitivity in offspring
ConclusionWe suggest that estrogen is essential for fetal skeletal muscle mitochondrial development and thus glucose homeostasis in adulthood. (Source: Endocrine)

Neonatal aromatase inhibition blocked defeminization of AVPV Kiss1 neurons and LH surge-generating system in male rats
Endocrinology. 2024 Mar 12:bqae028. doi: 10.1210/endocr/bqae028. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe neuroendocrine system that controls the pre-ovulatory surge of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)/luteinizing hormone (LH), which triggers ovulation in female mammals, is sexually differentiated in rodents. A transient increase in circulating testosterone levels in male rats within a few hours of birth is primarily responsible for the defeminization of anteroventral periventricular nucleus (AVPV) kisspeptin neurons, which are critical regulators of the GnRH/LH surge. The present study aimed to determine if neonatal estradi...
