Promoting the systematic use of real-world data and real-world evidence for digital health technologies across Europe: a consensus framework
Health Econ Policy Law. 2023 Sep 14:1-16. doi: 10.1017/S1744133123000208. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDespite the acceleration in the use of digital health technologies across different aspects of the healthcare system, the full potential of real-world data (RWD) and real-world evidence (RWE) arising from the technologies is not being utilised in decision-making. We examine current national efforts and future opportunities to systematically use RWD and RWE in decision-making in five countries (Estonia, Finland, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom), and then develop a framework for promotion of the systematic use of RWD...

The impact of COVID-19 related lockdown restrictions on musculoskeletal health: a systematic review
This study was aimed to synthesis literature that assessed the impact of COVID-19 related lockdown restrictions on MSK health. A literature search was conducted using MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Allied and Complementary Medicine Database (AMED), Web of Science, and Scopus databases. Studies meeting the following criteria were included in the review: the condition being considered was MSK health, the intervention was COVID-19 related lockdown restrictions, cross sectional studies, cohort studies, case controlled, prospective studies and retrospective studies. Data were extracted by 2 independent researchers. Risk of bias was...

A comprehensive analysis of all-cause and cause-specific excess deaths in 30 countries during 2020
This study analysed cause-of-death data provided by the World Health Organization from 2011 to 2019 to estimate excess deaths in 2020 in 30 countries. Over-dispersed Poisson regression models were used to estimate the number of deaths that would have been expected if the pandemic had not occurred, separately for men and women. The models included year and age categories to account for temporal trends and changes in size and age structure of the populations. Excess deaths were calculated by subtracting observed deaths  from expected ones. Our analysis revealed significant excess deaths from ischemic heart diseases (IHD) (i...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 6496: Investigation of 29 Antimicrobial Compounds in Soil Using Newly Developed UHPLC-MS/MS Method
In this study, an affordable, rugged and simple analytical method has been developed for the determination of twenty-nine antimicrobial compounds from five different classes (tetracyclines, fluoro(quinolones), macrolides, sulfonamides and diaminopirimidines). Liquid–liquid extraction (LLE) with extract filtration combined with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) was the best strategy for the simultaneous determination of all analytes. The developed method was validated according to the Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2021/808. The limit of detections (LO...

DNA Metabarcoding reveals spatial and temporal variation of fish eye fluke communities in lake ecosystems
Int J Parasitol. 2023 Aug 24:S0020-7519(23)00173-X. doi: 10.1016/j.ijpara.2023.07.005. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEye flukes (Diplostomidae) are diverse and abundant trematode parasites that form multi-species communities in fish with negative effects on host fitness and survival. However, the environmental factors and host-related characteristics that determine species diversity, composition, and coexistence in such communities remain poorly understood. Here, we developed a cost-effective cox1 region-specific DNA metabarcoding approach to characterize parasitic diplostomid communities in two common fish species (Eurasi...

Cancers, Vol. 15, Pages 4124: A Breast Cancer Polygenic Risk Score Is Feasible for Risk Stratification in the Norwegian Population
Conclusion: The previously validated PRS models have a similar observed accuracy in the Norwegian data as in the UK and Estonian populations. A PRS provides a meaningful association with the age of onset of BC and lifetime risk. Therefore, as suggested in Estonia, a PRS may also be integrated into the screening strategy for BC in Norway. Autosomal recessive Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy caused by a homozygous variant in DNAJC30 gene
We report the first two cases of DNAJC30-linked autosomal recessive LHON in a young male and a female originating from Estonia. The patients presented severe loss of central vision and clinical features indistinguishable from mitochondrial LHON. The whole exome sequencing carried out in the male patient and the next-generation sequencing panel in the young female patient identified the same homozygous missense variant in the DNAJC30 gene. Our cases further reinforce the pathogenicity of c.152A > G, p.(Tyr51Cys) DNAJC30 variant causing autosomal recessive LHON. According to the gnomAD database, the allele frequency of th...
