Inflammatory Causes of Dysphagia in Children
Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) and eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) are the most common inflammatory causes of pediatric dysphagia, but several other less prevalent conditions should be considered. These conditions can affect one or several aspects of the swallowing process. In some inflammatory conditions dysphagia may be an early symptom. Esophagoscopy and instrumental swallow studies are often needed to determine the underlying diagnosis and best treatment plan. In some inflammatory conditions dysphagia can portend a worse outcome and need for more aggressive treatment of the underlying condition. Consultations with speech...

Adult Esophageal Foreign Bodies
This manuscript reviews and outlines the necessary tools to efficiently assess and manage an adult patient where an esophageal foreign body is suspected. It reviews the vulnerable populations and relevant diagnostics and provides a triage diagram to aid in timely intervention. Management with esophagoscopy is reviewed as well as potential complications that may arise. Lastly, to illustrate the concepts of this section, a case study is presented to highlight the salient points. (Source: Otolaryngologic clinics of North America)

A case of antenatally undiagnosed laryngeal atresia with tracheo-esophageal fistula with airway obstruction at birth and its management
Paediatr Anaesth. 2023 Nov 15. doi: 10.1111/pan.14794. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLaryngeal atresia is a rare congenital anomaly that is usually diagnosed by antenatal ultrasound, however, if undiagnosed presents with desaturation after birth. A term neonate presented with airway obstruction after birth with multiple failed attempts at intubation and was rescued by proseal laryngeal mask airway (LMA). An esophagoscopy using an Ambuscope utilizing a modified connector assembly revealed an opening on the anterior wall of the esophagus with no esophageal atresia, leading to a diagnosis of H-type tracheo-esophageal fistula ...

Acquired Tracheo-esophageal Fistula: surgical management
Conclusion: Acquired tracheo-esophageal fistulae can lead to life-threatening complications if not treated swiftly. Complications of mechanical ventilation represent the first etiology. Once tracheo-esophageal fistulae are operated, the results are very satisfactory. (Source: European Respiratory Journal)

Adenocarcinoma arising from widespread heterotopic gastric mucosa in the cervicothoracic esophagus: a case report
CONCLUSIONS: Although the treatment for adenocarcinoma arising from HGM is basically the same as that for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the esophagus, it is important to determine the treatment strategy based on the characteristics of the adenocarcinoma arising from HGM.PMID:37470880 | DOI:10.1186/s40792-023-01707-7 (Source: Cancer Control)

Coexisting achalasia and leiomyoma misdiagnosed as the submucosal tumor, successfully treated by simultaneous peroral endoscopic myotomy and submucosal tunneling endoscopic resection in the same tunnel
Rev Esp Enferm Dig. 2023 Jun 22. doi: 10.17235/reed.2023.9736/2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPeroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) is a safe and effective method in the treatment of achalasia. Meanwhile, submucosal tunneling endoscopic resection (STER) is a common endoscopic method for the treatment of submucosal tumors (SMT) in the upper digestive tract. However simultaneous POEM and STER for coexisting achalasia and esophageal SMT is rarely reported. A 40-year-old woman underwent esophagoscopy after dysphagia and vomiting for 20 years. The protruding submucosal lesion with normal overlying mucosa was found in the lower ...

Pediatric foreign body ingestion in Makkah, Saudi Arabia: A retrospective epidemiological study
CONCLUSION: A large number of children presented with ingested FB, especially those younger than 4 years of age, whose clinical presentation varied from asymptomatic to severe complications, and urgent endoscopic intervention might have decreased serious complications. Further preventive measures are necessary within homes in addition to increasing caregivers' awareness of the different circumstances of FB ingestion and the time required for urgent admission.PMID:37343995 | PMC:PMC10284235 | DOI:10.15537/smj.2023.44.6.20230090 (Source: Saudi Medical Journal)
