Epidemiological characterization of viral etiological agents of the central nervous system infections among hospitalized patients in Egypt between 2016 and 2019
Virol J. 2023 Aug 2;20(1):170. doi: 10.1186/s12985-023-02079-y.ABSTRACTViral infections of the central nervous system (CNS) are common worldwide and result in considerable morbidity and mortality associated with neurologic illness. Until now, there have been no epidemiologic data regarding viruses causing aseptic meningitis, encephalitis, and CNS infections in Egypt. We investigated 1735 archived cerebrospinal fluid samples collected from Egyptian patients between 2016 and 2019 and performed molecular characterization for infection for12 different viruses: herpes simplex viruses 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2), varicella-zoster ...

Mortality Rates and autopsy findings in fat embolism syndrome complicating sickle cell disease
Fat embolism syndrome is a rare but underdiagnosed complication of sickle cell disease associated with high morbidity and mortality. It affects predominantly patients with a previously mild course of their illness and those of non-SS genotypes while there is possibly an association with infection with human parvovirus B19 (HPV B19). Here, we present the mortality rates and autopsy findings of all reported cases to date. A systematic review has revealed 99 published cases in the world literature with a mortality rate of 46%. Mortality varied greatly according to the time of reported cases with no survivors in the 1940s, 195...

Reactivation of Parvovirus B19 Infection: An Uncommon Trigger of Macrophage Activation Syndrome in Adult-Onset Still's Disease
Cureus. 2023 Apr 6;15(4):e37231. doi: 10.7759/cureus.37231. eCollection 2023 Apr.ABSTRACTA 40-year-old woman presented with four weeks of intermittent high-grade fever, cough, and joint pain, and two weeks of a generalized rash. She was found to have adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) and rapidly developed macrophage activation syndrome (MAS) on the second day of admission. Among infectious etiologies, Epstein-Barr virus and members of the herpes virus family are common triggers of MAS. However, our patient was found to have reactivation/recurrence of parvovirus B19 infection as the cause; this is an uncommon trigger repor...

Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 1124: Clinical Presentation of Parvovirus B19 Infection in Adults Living with HIV/AIDS: A Case Series
We report three rare cases of Brazilian adults living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) with B19V infection. All cases presented severe anemia and required red blood cell transfusions. The first patient had low CD4+ counts and was treated with intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG). As he remained poorly adherent to antiretroviral therapy (ART), B19V detection persisted. The second patient had sudden pancytopenia despite being on ART with an undetectable HIV viral load. He had historically low CD4+ counts, fully responded to IVIG, and had undiagnosed hereditary spherocytosis. The third individual was recently diagnosed wi...
