Protein that protects during stress sheds light on how diabetes drug prevents tumors
(University of California - San Diego) Researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine have identified a previously unknown mechanism that helps fortify the structure and tight junctions between epithelial cells -- a basic cell type that lines various body cavities and organs throughout the body, forming a protective barrier against toxins, pathogens and inflammatory triggers. Breaches of this barrier can provoke organ dysfunction and development of tumors. (Source: EurekAlert! - Cancer)

Record $18M Verdict in Mesothelioma-Talcum Powder Lawsuit
The recent record-setting $18 million verdict out of California rekindled the hotly debated link between talcum powder and mesothelioma cancer. A Los Angeles Superior Court jury awarded Philip Depoian the multimillion-dollar verdict against talc supplier Whittaker, Clark & Daniels. Depoian claimed the company’s asbestos-tainted talcum powder products used at the barbershop where his father worked exposed him to the deadly substance. He was diagnosed with mesothelioma, an aggressive cancer caused by asbestos exposure, in May 2015. Talcum powder is made from talc, one of the world’s softest minerals coveted for it...

Penn study shows how some intestinal cells resist chemotherapy and radiation
(University of Pennsylvania) When treating cancer with chemotherapy and radiation, decisions about dose must walk a fine line between attacking cancerous cells and preserving healthy ones. Overly aggressive radiation therapy to the torso, for example, can damage the epithelial cells that line the intestines, leading to chronic gastrointestinal problems. A new study from the University of Pennsylvania now shows how some intestinal cells can withstand chemotherapy and radiation. (Source: EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health)

E-cigarette vapor does not cause oxidative stress in viable lung epithelial cells
(R&D at British American Tobacco) E-cigarette vapor is much less harmful to lung cells than cigarette smoke. Lab tests show that, unlike tobacco smoke, which causes oxidative stress and cell death, e-cigarette vapor does not. Oxidative stress and cell death are driving factors in the development of many smoking-related diseases such as COPD and lung cancer. (Source: EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health)

A new tumor suppressor gene for breast cancer in mice
(Tokyo Institute of Technology) Researchers at Tokyo Institute of Technology revealed a role for an X-linked protein kinase Nrk in terminating the proliferation of mammary epithelial cells during pregnancy and thereby preventing breast tumorigenesis in mice. (Source: EurekAlert! - Cancer)

[Report] Collective cell durotaxis emerges from long-range intercellular force transmission
The ability of cells to follow gradients of extracellular matrix stiffness—durotaxis—has been implicated in development, fibrosis, and cancer. Here, we found multicellular clusters that exhibited durotaxis even if isolated constituent cells did not. This emergent mode of directed collective cell migration applied to a variety of epithelial cell types, required the action of myosin motors, and originated from supracellular transmission of contractile physical forces. To explain the observed phenomenology, we developed a generalized clutch model in which local stick-slip dynamics of cell-matrix adhesions was integrated t...

Fruit flies yield clues on cancerous tumor hotspots
(Florida State University) A Florida State University research team, in coordination with a team from Japan, has found that the epithelial tissues that line the surfaces of organs throughout the body intrinsically have hot spots for cancerous tumors. They discovered this by examining a common household pest -- the fruit fly. Peritoneal Mesothelioma May Be Linked to Crohn ’ s Disease
Chronic abdominal inflammation, typical of Crohn’s disease, could be a contributing factor in the development of peritoneal mesothelioma, according to a recent study. Pathologists from the University of Vermont and Duke University studied the link between the two diseases, raising the possibility of a previously underreported connection. The Journal of Clinical Pathology earlier this month published the retrospective study, providing insights on new inflammatory pathways that may lead to one type of the rare asbestos-related cancer. “The observations in this study prompt consideration of chronic serosal inflammation se...

Luteinising hormone releasing hormone (LHRH) agonists for the treatment of relapsed epithelial ovarian cancer
This Review concludes that based on two small RCTs, there is not enough evidence to comment on the safety and effectiveness of LHRH agonists in the treatment of platinum-refractory and platinum-resistant (relapsed) EOC. Overall, the quality of evidence for all outcomes (including OS, PFS, QoL and adverse events) is very low. (Source: Current Awareness Service for Health (CASH))
