Thoughts on levetiracetam (Keppra) dosing for epilepsy?
Hello everyone, Curious about your thoughts on something for those who have prescribed levetiracetam. Have any of you tried using the “pulse” dosing method (described here), which involves only using the medication at a higher dose immediately following and in the 48 hours after an epileptic seizure, rather than prescribing it to be used daily and continuously over time? If you have used this method, two questions for you: Did you find it to be as effective for preventing... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Child Neuro Salary
Hi everyone, PGY4 peds neuro resident here. Any insight on current salary trends for child neurologists ? I’m also applying for an epilepsy fellowship [hope to stay at my home institution for that but would like to relocate to Texas after fellowship]. Curious if being epilepsy trained adds anything ? Thanks everyone (Source: Student Doctor Network)

CNP 6m/6m vs 1 year neuromuscular and 1 year epilepsy
Does doing CNP fellowship reduce practice opportunities outside of rural communities (privademics, academics in bigger cities) compared to doing 2 years of fellowship and having much more experience with both neuromuscular and epilepsy by doing separate fellowships? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Neuropsychiatry
I'm a current M2 at a DO school who is interested interested in Psych and Neuro. I have a great deal of experience in both and recognize the differences between the two, but have enjoyed both the subject matter and what I've seen in shadowing. I recognize I will likely figure out which one I'll be going into next year - but I was wondering if there was any way to scratch my interests in both fields? I understand that Movement and Epilepsy both see a good deal of psychiatric comorbidities -... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

What subspecialties can have a week on, week off schedule in academia?
I’ve realised a week on, week off schedule is the most valuable thing for me in terms of being able to visit my family in another country more often. At the same time, I do want to remain in academia (and the low salary isn’t a problem for me as I do have another source of income and don’t have loans). I know stroke and NCC are doable, but are other specialties like epilepsy also possible? At my residency, the epileptologists have a normal clinic schedule and not a week on week off schedule... ChatGPT multiple choice question
A 52-year-old female patient is brought to the psychiatric emergency service with marked motor abnormalities. On examination, she displays mutism, staring, grimacing, echolalia, and echopraxia. The patient is on high doses of diazepam, and previous laboratory findings revealed elevated levels of glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) antibodies. Her past medical history includes epilepsy and diabetes mellitus. The patient's sister, who is her legal guardian and resides overseas, has instructed... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Multiple experiences of the same "type"
So I have a good dilemma: I have like 20 meaningful things with meaningful amounts of hours to put into my Activities section. Some of these things are similar or at least have some connecting thread, i.e. summer camp for kids with epilepsy / summer camp for LGBT+ kids, volunteering at several hospitals but in different roles/depts, several somewhat related jobs within separate industries or sub-disciplines, multiple disparate hobbies, etc. Should I: - pick the "best" one of the like... Personal statement theme advice?
Hi all, I'm currently working on my PS, and am having trouble creating a coherent theme from a couple things that I feel I want to focus on. Assuming the cliche of "wanting to be a doctor since I was young", I was diagnosed with epilepsy as I started high school. This eventually led to a lot of other setbacks, such as limitations in transportation (no public transportation where I live) and the work I could do. This also affected my mental health in a significantly over the years. I have a... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Do purely outpatient neurologist have to do general neurology?
Current 4th year applying to neurology this cycle. If I decide to fellowship in epilepsy for example but want to do outpatient only seeing epilepsy patients and reading EMGs without doing inpatient neurology, is this something that is feasible? Or is it usually a lot of epilepsy patients mixed in with general neurology? Thanks in advance for your guidance. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Two fellowships in neurology advice (1 outpatient+1 inpatient)
Hello, I have read threads of doing multiple neurology fellowships before, however I wanted to kind of run again my idea of doing two fellowships by the members of this group. I like stroke but hate the lifestyle. I okay-ish like multiple sclerosis/epilepsy but love their lifestyles (MS>Epilepsy). Thus I was wondering if doing (stroke+ MS) or (stroke+epilepsy) is a good idea with a hope to later transition to only outpatient practice. I know stroke doesn't need a fellowship especially if... Strange nonclinical employment situation - Red flag?
I had many, many years where I couldn't hold down a job for very long due to transportation issues related to poorly controlled epilepsy. I lived in a rural area where Uber was not an option. Our only cab company was one guy (who creeped me out to boot!). If he was busy with another passenger, you were bum out of luck. It's not like walking was an option for me either. I eventually gave up! There were limited options for someone who couldn't do any kind of farm labor in a rural area too. I... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Epilepsy subspecialty career/fellowship advice
Hi all, I am a neurology resident applying to fellowships this year, and I am a bit lost and hoping to get some advice about pursuing epilepsy. I recently came to be interested in the field so I haven't had time to gather information about it. I find EEG and its use to find the seizure focus very interesting, and also found treating seizure patients rewarding in clinic. ICU and inpatient EEG also interests me greatly. The idea of working patients up for surgical resection also sounds... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
