Colorectal endometriosis. A proposal of complementary classification and surgical management in stages
CONCLUSIONS: We suggest a sequence of colorectal surgical management in stages according to the staging of the disease and we hope that this work will be followed by joint efforts to test it prospectively in order to compare results between hospital centers and make planned decisions.PMID:38537245 | DOI:10.24875/CIRU.23000251 (Source: Cirugia y Cirujanos)

Efficacy and safety of dienogest in the treatment of deep infiltrating endometriosis: A meta-analysis
Deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE) refers to endometriosis (EMs) with an infiltration depth greater than or equal to 5  mm. It is an invasive disease that involves the uterosacral ligament, the excavatio rectouterina, vaginal vault, vaginal-rectal septum, rectum, colon wall, bladder wall, and the ureter. DIE can cause evident chronic pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, dysuria, non-menstrual pelvic pain, local bleeding, and the obstruction of vital organs. EMs affects about 10 % of women of childbearing age. (Source: European Journal of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Biology)

Causal effects of glycemic traits and endometriosis: a bidirectional and multivariate mendelian randomization study
Observational studies have suggested an association between endometriosis and glycemic traits, but causality remains unclear. We used bidirectional and multivariate Mendelian randomization (MR) to examine the ... (Source: Diabetology and Metabolic Syndrome)

The kisspeptin system in and beyond reproduction: exploring intricate pathways and potential links between endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome
AbstractEndometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are two common female reproductive disorders with a significant impact on the health and quality of life of women affected. A novel hypothesis by evolutionary biologists suggested that these two diseases are inversely related to one another, representing a pair of diametrical diseases in terms of opposite alterations in reproductive physiological processes but also contrasting phenotypic traits. However, to fully explain the phenotypic features observed in women with these conditions, we need to establish a potential nexus system between the reproductive system and...

Rare but Still There: A Scoping Review on Endometriosis-Associated Ovarian Cancer
Discov Med. 2024 Mar;36(182):467-481. doi: 10.24976/Discov.Med.202436182.44.ABSTRACTEndometriosis is a medical condition affecting at least up to 10% of women of reproductive age. This condition occurs when ectopic endometrial glands and stroma implant outside the uterus and there are several theories regarding the underlying origins of the disease. Endometriosis is one of the major causes of severe dysmenorrhoea, chronic pelvic pain and infertility. While endometriosis is generally a non-malignant condition, it rarely may transform into an invasive cancer, and increase the risk for epithelial ovarian cancer, notably endom...

Magnetic Resonance –Guided Focused Ultrasound Surgery for Gynecologic Indications
Magnetic resonance –guided focused ultrasound surgery (MRgFUS) appears to be an effective and safe treatment for uterine fibroids and adenomyosis, particularly in women who wish to preserve fertility. In abdominal wall endometriosis and painful recurrent gynecologic malignancies, MRgFUS can relieve pain, but more re search is needed. There is no widespread reimbursement due to the lack of large prospective or randomized controlled trials comparing MRgFUS with standard therapy. PURE vs. mixed clear cell ovarian carcinomas: Is there any impact on survival?
CONCLUSION: This retrospective study showed that although mixed type histological origin was associated with higher OS and DFS rates compared to pure type in patients with CCOC, the difference was not statistically significant. Advanced age and the presence of endometriosis was found to have a significant independent effect on OS and DFS and was associated with a worse prognosis. Overall, this study provides useful insights into the clinical characteristics of patients with CCOC and identifies important prognostic factors affecting survival.PMID:38518487 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejogrb.2024.03.021 (Source: Reproductive Biology)

Ultrasound-guided erector spinae nerve block for relief of endometriosis pain in the emergency department
We report the case of a 23-year-old female with a past medical history of endometriosis who presented to a freestanding emergency department with a chief complaint of 10/10 pelvic pain on a numeric rating scale. She had tried non-steroidal inflammatory medications and heat with no success. The patient had medication intolerances to opioid analgesics and was given ketorolac intramuscularly with no relief of her pain. The emergency physician discussed and offered to perform an erector spinae plane nerve block (ESPB) for pain relief. Ultrasonography was utilized for visualization of landmarks with a curvilinear transducer; a ...

Translocator protein  expression and localization in human endometrium and endometriosis: A potential target for a noninvasive diagnosis?
Cell Biol Int. 2024 Mar 21. doi: 10.1002/cbin.12157. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe limitations of current imaging methods to detect small or superficial endometriotic lesions prompt the search for new molecular targets. TSPO is an 18 KDa protein located in the outer mitochondrial membrane, which can be traced by positron emission tomography (PET) using specific ligands. TSPO is located mostly in neurons and inflammatory sites outside the brain. We hypothesized that it might also be expressed in the human endometrium and endometrial-like tissue, being a target for molecular imaging of endometriosis. This prospective cro...
