Mycobacterial Endocarditis, A Rare Form of Infective Endocarditis
Discov Med. 2024 Mar;36(182):437-447. doi: 10.24976/Discov.Med.202436182.41.ABSTRACTThis research project delves into the multifaceted dynamics of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb) endocarditis, a significant yet uncommon manifestation of tuberculosis (TB). Beginning with an overview of M.tb and the global challenges posed by TB, we navigate through the bacterium's evolution, transmission modes, and the intricate host immune response. The pathology and pathophysiology of M.tb endocarditis are explored, emphasizing its complexities and the host's efforts to contain the pathogen. The study extends to atypical mycobacterial e...

Isolated mitral valve aneurysm in a 9-year old boy
CONCLUSIONS: Being rare in children, isolated MVA should be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of mass lesions seen on the atrial side of the mitral valve. A 24-hour electrocardiogram may define subtle rhythm disturbances in these patients.PMID:38523391 | DOI:10.24953/turkjped.2023.314 (Source: The Turkish Journal of Pediatrics)

Rapid formation of aortoesophageal fistula complicated by mycotic thoracic aortic aneurysm secondary to infective endocarditis
Rev Esp Enferm Dig. 2024 Mar 25. doi: 10.17235/reed.2024.10397/2024. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA 73-year-old man was admitted with four weeks of intermittent fever. He had a history of total aortic arch replacement for aortic arch aneurysm four years prior. CT scans showed no abnormalities before admission. Repeated blood cultures yielded Streptococcus anginosus and Prevotella melaninogenica, suggesting infective endocarditis (IE). Transesophageal echocardiography revealed a vegetation on the aortic valve, confirming IE. He suddenly presented with massive hematemesis and hypotension. Endoscopy revealed an elevated lesi...

Utility of echocardiogram in neutropenic patients with gram positive bacteremia - a retrospective study
Conclusion In our experience, the yield of echocardiogram in hemato-oncological neutropenic patients with bacteremia is extremely low, owing to reduced probability of IE in this population, and thus could be avoided in most cases.PMID:38527433 | DOI:10.1159/000538449 (Source: Acta Haematologica)

Magnolol attenuates macrophage pyroptosis triggered by Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus
Int Immunopharmacol. 2024 Mar 23;131:111922. doi: 10.1016/j.intimp.2024.111922. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStreptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus (SEZ) is a zoonotic bacterial pathogen that causes life-threatening infections and various diseases such as meningitis, endocarditis and pneumonia. With the use of antibiotics being severely restricted in the international community, an alternative to antibiotics is urgently needed against bacterial. In the present study, the herbal extract magnolol protected mice against SEZ infection, reflected by increased survival rate and reduced bacterial burden. A pro-inflammatory form...

Penicillin allergy reassessment for treatment improvement: A dental office tool to support appropriate penicillin allergy labeling
CONCLUSIONS: Patient and HCW feedback on the PARTI tool was used to finalize a tool for the dental office to provide to patients who are candidates for PCN allergy reassessment. The feedback will also be used to inform an upcoming pilot study in US dental offices, focused on the process for PCN allergy reassessment and health record documentation.PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Deploying the PARTI tool in dental offices is pivotal, as mislabeling patients with PCN allergies could have severe consequences, such as hindering the prescription of lifesaving antibiotics for conditions like endocarditis, in the future. This implementati...
