A network-based approach to explore comorbidity patterns among community-dwelling older adults living alone
This study employed a network-based approach to investigate the comorbidity patterns of community-dwelling older adults living alone. The sample comprised a cross-sectional cohort of adults 65 or older living alone in a Korean city (n = 1041; mean age = 77.7 years, 77.6% women). A comorbidity network analysis that estimates networks aggregated from measures of significant co-occurrence between pairs of diseases was employed to investigate comorbid associations between 31 chronic conditions. A cluster detection algorithm was employed to identify specific clusters of comorbidities. The association strength was expre...

Deferasirox causing duodenal ulcer leading to upper gastrointestinal bleed and hemorrhagic shock in a child with beta-thalassemia major
Anu Tresa, Guruprasad Hassan Shankar, Bhakti U Sarangi, Ajay WalimbeIndian Journal of Pharmacology 2023 55(5):335-337 Iron chelators have significantly reduced the morbidity associated with iron overload and improved the quality of life in children with beta-thalassemia major. A 5-year-old female child with beta-thalassemia major on recurrent transfusions and oral chelation with deferasirox was brought with repeated episodes of frank hematemesis and progressive lethargy. Her evaluation revealed anemia, leukocytosis, and deranged liver function with coagulopathy. She was given red blood cell and plasma transfusions with li...

Eosinophilic granulomatous with polyangiitis complicated by swelling of the oral cavity floor and cervical soft tissue as initial manifestation mimicking IgG4-related disease: A case report
Mod Rheumatol Case Rep. 2023 Oct 30:rxad062. doi: 10.1093/mrcr/rxad062. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEosinophilic granulomatous polyangiitis is a systemic vasculitis associated with bronchial asthma and eosinophilic sinusitis. Here we describe an unusual presentation of eosinophilic granulomatous polyangiitis that initially manifested as swelling of the oral cavity floor and cervical soft tissue. A 58-year-old Japanese man was diagnosed with bronchial asthma during childhood but did not receive regular medication. Prior to this presentation, he had a persistent cough for over 1 month, and a local physician diagnosed him w...

Genome-wide Mendelian randomization identifies putatively causal gut microbiota for multiple peptic ulcer diseases
ConclusionIn this study, the pathogenic bacterial genera in the gut microbiota that promote the occurrence of PUDs were found to be causally related. There are multiple correlations between intestinal flora and PUDs, overlapping PUDs have overlapping associated genera. The variance in ulcer-related bacterial genera across different locations underscores the potential influence of anatomical locations and physiological functions. (Source: Frontiers in Immunology)

An unusual case of severe gastrointestinal bleeding
We present the case of a 58-year-old female with a history of a bleeding duodenal peptic ulcer. Endoscopic hemostasis was unsuccessful; therefore, a transcatheter arterial embolization of a culprit vessel was performed. She was admitted to the hospital two months later because of obstruction of the common bile duct with cholangitis. Attempts to endoscopically place a biliary stent failed. The treating medical team opted for a surgical choledocho-jejunostomy. After 20 months, she presented with a melena and a severe anemia. Diagnostic work-up revealed portal vein thrombosis with portal cavernoma and bleeding choledocho-jeju...
