Tropical Storm Erika Weakens
(HAVANA) — Tropical Storm Erika dissipated early Saturday, even as its remnants began drenching parts of eastern Cuba. But it left devastation in its path, killing at least 20 people and leaving nearly 50 missing on the small eastern Caribbean island of Dominica, authorities said. In Haiti, one person died in a mudslide just north of Port-au-Prince, and at least four others were killed in a traffic accident that apparently occurred in the rain. Cuba Suffers Through The Worst Drought Of ‘The Last Century’
With the year-long drought in Cuba forecast to worsen in the coming months, some residents are harboring what may seem like an unusual hope. “It is hard to believe, but many of us are hoping for a hurricane,” Nuris Lopez, a hairdresser in Granma province, told Reuters earlier this month. “I might lose my roof, but at least I could clean my house.” Lopez is one of more than 1 million people in Cuba who are currently relying on trucked-in water to survive. Reuters says one in 10 residents in the Caribbean country have been depending on government tank trucks to make do during a record hot summer....
