It is up to healthcare professionals to talk to us in a way that we can understand: informed consent processes in people with an intellectual disability
People with an intellectual disability form a sizeable minority group. Estimates of prevalence vary, depending on criteria used, but it is thought that intellectual disability affects around 1%–2% of the world population.1 2 Intellectual disability is present when the following three criteria are met: a significantly reduced ability to understand new or complex information, or to learn and apply new skills (impaired intelligence); a reduced ability to cope independently (impaired social functioning); and beginning before adulthood, with a lasting effect on development.3 4 Health inequities People with an intellectual...

Equitable and accessible informed healthcare consent process for people with intellectual disability: a systematic literature review
Conclusions Multiple reasons contribute to poor consent practices for people with intellectual disability in current health systems. Recommendations include addressing health professionals’ attitudes and lack of education in informed consent with clinician training, the co-production of accessible information resources and further inclusive research into informed consent for people with intellectual disability. Effects of taxane-induced peripheral neuropathy on hand dexterity impairment: evaluation of quantitative and subjective assessments
CONCLUSION: Subjective symptoms (numbness and pain) and grip force control contributed to impaired hand dexterity in taxane-induced peripheral neuropathy.PMID:38652168 | DOI:10.1007/s00520-024-08504-4 (Source: Cancer Control)

Meeting speech, language and communication needs: a whole-systems, population-based approach
This article sets out the case for taking a population-health based approach to anticipating need and building whole systems around children in their functional contexts, whether home, early years setting, school or further education. The demand on services providing speech and lang uage therapy continues to increase year on year. Using a population-health approach to predicting areas of higher anticipated SLCN and establishing robust collaborative approaches to improving the context for children and young people vulnerable to SLCN, there is the potential to address a significa nt number needs within everyday contexts. Purinergic Signalling Mediates Aberrant Excitability of Developing Neuronal Circuits in the Fmr1 Knockout Mouse Model
In this study, we examined whether elevated astrocyte purinergic signalling also impacts neuronal morphology and connectivity ofFmr1 KO cortical neurons. Here, we found that conditioned media from primaryFmr1 KO astrocytes was sufficient to enhance neurite extension and complexity of both wildtype andFmr1 KO neurons to a similar degree as UTP-mediated outgrowth. Significantly enhanced firing was also observed inFmr1 KO neuron-astrocyte co-cultures grown on microelectrode arrays but was associated with large deficits in firing synchrony. The selective P2Y2 purinergic receptor antagonist AR-C 118925XX effectively normalized ...

Outcomes after radioscapholunate arthrodesis for intra-articular malunion of distal radius fractures
ConclusionRSL arthrodesis (using locked miniplates without distal scaphoid excision)  is a reliable surgical procedure to manage cases of radiocarpal OA after intra-articular malunion of distal radius fractures with good clinical and radiological outcomes.Level of evidenceLevel IV- therapeutic. Real world data in mechanical thrombectomy: who are we losing to follow-up?
Conclusion MOD in routine care MT registry data was not random. Increased efforts to perform clinical follow-up are needed, especially in the case of higher pre-stroke and post-stroke disability and discharge to hospital or institutional care. Which is Better in Predicting CT Scores in Patients with Chronic Rhinosinusitis after Medical treatment-Baseline Rhinosinusitis Disability Index (RSDI) or Endoscopic Score?
ConclusionStatistically significant (p <  0.001) association was found between baseline Lund-Kennedy endoscopic scores and Mackay-Lund CT scores post medical treatment. No significant association was found between RSDI scores and Mackay-Lund CT scores. ROC analysis indicated that Lund- Kennedy endoscopy score is a more accurate tool than RSDI score to predict a Mackay-Lund CT scores after medical treatment. Do the management and functional outcomes of the surgically treated spinal fractures change in suicidal jumpers?
ConclusionPsychiatric disorders are more common in patients in the suicidal jumpers. The presence of underlying psychiatric problems adversely affects the postoperative functional outcomes of patients with surgically treated spinal fractures. A multidisciplinary approach together with raising awareness in this way can improve the clinical outcomes after orthopedic treatment, even if there is physical disability.
