Reducing hydrophobic drug adsorption in an in-vitro extracorporeal membrane oxygenation model
Eur J Pharm Biopharm. 2024 Mar 13:114261. doi: 10.1016/j.ejpb.2024.114261. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTExtracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a life-saving cardiopulmonary bypass technology for critically ill patients with heart and lung failure. Patients treated with ECMO receive a range of drugs that are used to treat underlying diseases and critical illnesses. However, the dosing guidelines for these drugs used in ECMO patients are unclear. Mortality rate for patients on ECMO exceeds 40% partly due to inaccurate dosing information, caused in part by the adsorption of drugs in the ECMO circuit and its components...

Neuropsychological follow-up of isoflurane sedated intensive care patients: a substudy of a randomized trial
CONCLUSIONS: Isoflurane sedation leads to more delirium free days during the ICU treatment and more factual memories of the ICU stay one year after the ICU stay. However long-term outcome of ventilated ICU patients is poor, and there were no differences between isoflurane and propofol sedation.PMID:38482637 | DOI:10.23736/S0375-9393.24.17834-0 (Source: Minerva Anestesiologica)

Adverse Drug Events Observed with the Newly Approved Remimazolam in Comparison to Propofol for General Anesthesia in Patients Undergoing Surgery: A Meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Our current analysis showed that the newly approved remimazolam was apparently associated with significantly fewer adverse drug events in comparison to propofol for GA in patients undergoing surgery. Therefore, this new drug should be further studied and more research with larger population sizes should be carried out to confirm this hypothesis.PMID:38480661 | DOI:10.1007/s12325-024-02820-1 (Source: Adv Data)

Propofol modulates Nrf2/NLRP3 signaling to ameliorate cigarette smoke-induced damage in human bronchial epithelial cells
This study aimed to elucidate the protective mechanisms of propofol against CSE-induced damage in human bronchial epithelial 16HBE cells. In CSE-induced 16HBE cells treated by propofol with or without transfection of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) interference plasmids, CCK-8 assay and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assay evaluated cytotoxicity. TUNEL assay and Western blot appraised cell apoptosis. ELISA and relevant assay kits severally measured inflammatory and oxidative stress levels. DCFH-DA fluorescent probe detected intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) activity. Immunofluorescence staining an...

Efficacy and safety of esketamine combined with propofol for curative endoscopic resection in colorectum: a prospective, randomized controlled trial
Curative endoscopic resection is widely used to treat colonic polyps and early stage cancers. The anesthetic strategy commonly involves the use of propofol combined with a small dose of opioids for sedation. A... (Source: BMC Anesthesiology)

Electroencephalographic guided propofol-remifentanil TCI anesthesia with and without dexmedetomidine in a geriatric population: electroencephalographic signatures and clinical evaluation
AbstractElderly and multimorbid patients are at high risk for developing unfavorable postoperative neurocognitive outcomes; however, well-adjusted and EEG-guided anesthesia may help titrate anesthesia and improve postoperative outcomes. Over the last decade, dexmedetomidine has been increasingly used as an adjunct in the perioperative setting. Its synergistic effect with propofol decreases the dose of propofol needed to induce and maintain general anesthesia. In this pilot study, we evaluate two highly standardized anesthetic regimens for their potential to prevent burst suppression and postoperative neurocognitive dysfunc...
