A case of fulminant respiratory diphtheria in a 24-year-old Afghan refugee in Austria in May 2022: a case report
ConclusionIn high-income countries with low case numbers, awareness of respiratory diphtheria and for the importance of early antitoxin administration must be raised. (Source: Infection)

Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices Concerning Maternal Immunization Among Pregnant/Postpartum Women and Health Care Professionals in Peru
ConclusionsTo enhance vaccine acceptance in pregnant women in Peru, we must improve knowledge of the diseases, MOH recommendations, and benefits of the offered vaccinations. HCPs could provide this vaccination knowledge and information along with their vaccination recommendation as the pregnant/postpartum women indicated they would take the vaccines if recommended by their HCPs. Our findings are important for the successful implementation of maternal immunization programs in Peru. (Source: Infectious Diseases and Therapy)

Assessing the characteristics of un- and under-vaccinated children in low- and middle-income countries: A multi-level cross-sectional study
PLOS Glob Public Health. 2022 Apr 27;2(4):e0000244. doi: 10.1371/journal.pgph.0000244. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTAchieving equity in vaccination coverage has been a critical priority within the global health community. Despite increased efforts recently, certain populations still have a high proportion of un- and under-vaccinated children in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). These populations are often assumed to reside in remote-rural areas, urban slums and conflict-affected areas. Here, we investigate the effects of these key community-level factors, alongside a wide range of other individual, household and c...

Estimates of the number and distribution of zero-dose and under-immunised children across remote-rural, urban, and conflict-affected settings in low and middle-income countries
PLOS Glob Public Health. 2022 Oct 26;2(10):e0001126. doi: 10.1371/journal.pgph.0001126. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTWhile there has been great success in increasing the coverage of new childhood vaccines globally, expanding routine immunization to reliably reach all children and communities has proven more challenging in many low- and middle-income countries. Achieving this requires vaccination strategies and interventions that identify and target those unvaccinated, guided by the most current and detailed data regarding their size and spatial distribution. Through the integration and harmonisation of a range of geospatial da...

Tagraxofusp for blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm
Haematologica. 2023 Mar 23. doi: 10.3324/haematol.2022.282171. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBlastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) is a rare hematologic malignancy that presents with characteristic dark purple skin papules, plaques, and tumors, but may also involve the bone marrow, blood, lymph nodes, and central nervous system. The disease, which commonly affects older men but can also present in children, is associated with a distinct immunophenotype including universal expression of CD123, the alpha chain of the interleukin 3 receptor. Recently, tagraxofusp, a CD123-targeting drug consisting of the ligand...

Macrophage-infectivity potentiator of Trypanosoma cruzi (TcMIP) is a new pro-type 1 immuno-stimulating protein for neonatal human cells and vaccines in mice
This work identifies the protein “macrophage infectivity potentiator” of Trypanosoma cruzi trypomastigotes, as supporting a new property, namely a pro-type 1 immunostimulatory activity on neonatal cells. In its recombinant form (rTcMIP), this protein triggers the secretion of the chemokines CCL2 and CCL3 by human umbilical cord blood cells from healthy newborns, after 24h in vitro culture. Further stimulation for 72h results in secretion of IFN-γ, provided cultures are supplemented with IL-2 and IL-18. rTcMIP activity is totally abolished by protease treatment and is not associated with its peptidyl-prolyl cis-trans i...

Inclusion of vaccination into clinical pathways for COPD and asthma: current challenges and future perspectives in Italy
CONCLUSIONS: Italian CPWs still pay little attention to the topic of vaccinations in patients with COPD and asthma. CPWs are required to be updated in the future being compliant with the national immunization schedule recommendations.PMID:36942681 | DOI:10.19191/EP23.1-2.A521.015 (Source: Herpes)

Changes in vaccination administration in Japan
Vaccine. 2023 Mar 16:S0264-410X(23)00282-7. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.03.020. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis paper reviews the administration related to vaccination in Japan after the enactment of the Immunization Act in 1948, under which vaccination was implemented mandatory for the public. To enhance the effectiveness of vaccination activities, the government implemented group vaccination, which is convenient for vaccinating recipients all at once. In 1976, Japan established the relief system for health damage after vaccination. While some projects, such as the mass administration of live oral polio vaccine in 1961...

Attenuation of renal injury by depleting cDC1 and by repurposing Flt3 inhibitor in anti-GBM disease
Clin Immunol. 2023 Mar 16:109295. doi: 10.1016/j.clim.2023.109295. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPrevious studies found cDC1s to be protective in early stage anti-GBM disease through Tregs, but pathogenic in late stage Adriamycin nephropathy through CD8+ T cells. Flt3 ligand is a growth factor essential for cDC1 development and Flt3 inhibitors are currently used for cancer treatment. We conducted this study to clarify the role and mechanisms of effects of cDC1s at different time points in anti-GBM disease. In addition, we aimed to utilize drug repurposing of Flt3 inhibitors to target cDC1s as a treatment of anti-GBM diseas...

Universal Tetanus-Diphtheria-Pertussis Vaccination During Pregnancy: A Cost-Effectiveness Analysis
CONCLUSION: In a theoretical U.S. cohort of 3.66 million pregnant individuals, Tdap vaccination during pregnancy is cost effective and reduces infant morbidity and mortality compared with no vaccination during pregnancy. These findings are especially relevant given that approximately half of individuals are not vaccinated during pregnancy and recent data have shown that postpartum maternal vaccination and cocooning strategies are ineffective. Public health strategies to encourage greater uptake of Tdap vaccination should be used to reduce the morbidity and mortality of pertussis infection.PMID:36897561 | DOI:10.1097/AOG.00...
