A lentivirus-vectored feline erythropoietin gene therapy strategy in tissue culture and rodent models for the potential treatment of chronic renal disease-associated anemia
Am J Vet Res. 2024 Apr 20:1-12. doi: 10.2460/ajvr.23.12.0280. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of a third-generation lentivirus-based vector encoding the feline erythropoietin (EPO) (feEPO) gene in vitro and in rodent models in vivo. This vector incorporates a genetic mechanism to facilitate the termination of the therapeutic effect in the event of supraphysiologic polycythemia, the herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase (HSV-TK) "suicide gene."ANIMALS: CFRK cells and replication-defective lentiviral vectors encoding feEPO were used for in vitro experiments...

The effect of Tai Chi/Qigong on depression and anxiety symptoms in adults with Cancer: A systematic review and meta-regression
CONCLUSIONS: TCQ practice exhibits small-to-moderate efficacy in alleviating depression and anxiety symptoms among cancer patients and survivors. Moreover, patients with depressive symptoms for whom TCQ intervention coupled with improvements in function-related outcomes manifested greater antidepressant effect.PMID:38626582 | DOI:10.1016/j.ctcp.2024.101850 (Source: Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice)

Youth adversity and trajectories of depression/anxiety symptoms in adolescence in the context of intersectionality in the United Kingdom
CONCLUSIONS: The detrimental effects of youth adversity pervade across intersectionality profiles. The extent to which these effects are moderated by intersectionality is discussed in terms of operational factors. The current results provide a platform for further research, which is needed to determine the importance of intersectionality as a moderator of youth adversity on the development of depression and anxiety symptoms in adolescence.PMID:38623689 | DOI:10.1017/S0033291724000795 (Source: Psychological Medicine)

Risk factors for suicide reattempt: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Most of the risk factors traditionally associated with suicide are also relevant when talking about suicide reattempts. Knowing the traits that define reattempters can help develop better preventive and intervention plans.PMID:38623694 | DOI:10.1017/S0033291724000904 (Source: Psychological Medicine)

Effect of Depression Interventions in Patients Undergoing Total Joint Arthroplasty Without a Formal Diagnosis of Depression: A Systematic Review
CONCLUSIONS: Overall, a wide range of interventions aimed at psychological optimization of patients undergoing TJA can improve depressive symptoms, pain, and function, even in the absence of a formal diagnosis of depression. Specifically, cognitive-based psychotherapy and enhanced perioperative support had the best evidence. Routine pharmacotherapy plays a limited role, if any, in the care of TJA. Additional efforts to develop pragmatic, evidence-based, and reproducible interventions are warranted to continue to optimize outcomes in TJA patients.PMID:38626430 | DOI:10.5435/JAAOS-D-23-01130 (Source: The Journal of the Ameri...

Roles of Nutrients in the Brain Development, Cognitive Function, and Mood of Dogs and Cats
Adv Exp Med Biol. 2024;1446:177-202. doi: 10.1007/978-3-031-54192-6_8.ABSTRACTThe brain is the central commander of all physical activities and the expression of emotions in animals. Its development and cognitive health critically depend on the neural network that consists of neurons, glial cells (namely, non-neuronal cells), and neurotransmitters (communicators between neurons). The latter include proteinogenic amino acids (e.g., L-glutamate, L-aspartate, and glycine) and their metabolites [e.g., γ-aminobutyrate, D-aspartate, D-serine, nitric oxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, and monoamines (e.g., dopamine, norep...

Walking Activity and Physical Function Among Mexican American Older Adults Over 9  Years of Follow Up
CONCLUSIONS: Mexican American older adults who engage in any walking activity are at reduced risk of low physical function, even those with disability. Interventions at the individual and community level are recommended to reduce physical function impairment, even in those with preexisting medical conditions or disability.PMID:38626896 | DOI:10.1123/jpah.2023-0266 (Source: Journal of Physical Activity and Health)

Correlates of Impairment and Growth in Families of Young Autistic Children
J Autism Dev Disord. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.1007/s10803-024-06339-w. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe purpose of this project was to investigate potential correlates of family life impairment in families of young autistic children. This project incorporated measures of specific child and parent challenges in addition to a commonly used unidimensional measure of autism characteristics. In this way, we could assess whether such challenges explain variance in family life impairment, and whether their inclusion diminish associations between autism characteristics and family life impairment. Cross-sectional data were collected f...

Association between precarious employment and the onset of depressive symptoms in men and women: a 13-year longitudinal analysis in Korea (2009-2022)
CONCLUSIONS: Employment insecurity, inadequate income and lack of rights and protection may contribute to depressive symptoms. Therefore, PE serves as a significant social determinant of mental health among workers in Korea. Active policy efforts are warranted to improve the overall quality of employment in the workforce.PMID:38623756 | DOI:10.1017/S2045796024000258 (Source: Epidemiology and Psychiatric Sciences)

Bright light therapy versus physical exercise to prevent co-occurring depression in adolescents and young adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: a multicentre, three-arm, randomised controlled, pilot phase-IIa trial
Eur Arch Psychiatry Clin Neurosci. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.1007/s00406-024-01784-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDepression is common in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but preventive behavioural interventions are lacking. This randomised controlled, pilot phase-IIa trial aimed to study a physical exercise intervention (EI) and bright light therapy (BLT)-both implemented and monitored in an individual, naturalistic setting via a mobile health (m-health) system-for feasibility of trial design and interventions, and to estimate their effects on depressive symptoms in young people with ADHD. Two hundred seven p...

The Association Between Stuttering Burden and Psychosocial Aspects of Life in Adults
CONCLUSIONS: Our results emphasize the need to be attentive to the diverse experiences and needs of PWS, rather than treating them as a homogeneous group. Our findings also stress the importance of personalized therapeutic strategies for individuals with stuttering, considering all aspects that could influence their stuttering burden. People with high-burden stuttering might, for example, have a higher need for psychological therapy to reduce stuttering-related anxiety. People with less emotional reactions but severe speech distortions may also have a moderate to high burden, but they may have a higher need for speech tech...

Poststroke Communication Ability Predicts Patient-Informant Discrepancies in Reported Activities and Participation
DISCUSSION: These findings highlight the importance of measuring participation by PROM. The PWA's experience of participation is not related to their level of language impairment and is predictably different from their care partners' perspective. As others have also reported, "mild" aphasia is not so mild to the PWA. Similarly, "severe" may not be so severe to the PWA. Further research is needed to connect these findings with counseling and caregiver education. Research on response processes (e.g., response shift) is also warranted.PMID:38625105 | DOI:10.1044/2024_AJSLP-23-00322 (Source: American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology)
