SESSAMO, follow-up of secondary students to assess mental health and obesity: a cohort study
Gac Sanit. 2024 Apr 12;38:102385. doi: 10.1016/j.gaceta.2024.102385. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDuring last decades, a departure from health-related lifestyles has been observed among adolescents. Evidence reports that healthy lifestyles could be predictors of better mental health status. The aims of the SESSAMO Project are: 1) to assess the association between lifestyles and physical and mental health; 2) to assess how self-concept and stressful life events can modulate these associations; and 3) to establish the role of social determinants in the lifestyle and in adolescents' health. The SESSAMO Project is a prospecti...

The Stability of Social and Behavioral Rhythms and Unexpected Low Rate of Relevant Depressive Symptoms in Old Adults during the COVID-19 Pandemic
Conclusions: Among elderlies who did not show an increased risk of depression during the lockdown, social and behavioral rhythms remained exceptionally stable during the same period. Considering previous evidence about rhythms dysregulation preceding depression, their stability may be considered a factor of resilience.PMID:38610769 | PMC:PMC11012795 | DOI:10.3390/jcm13072005 (Source: Methods of Information in Medicine)

Colonial-driven extinction of the blue antelope despite genomic adaptation to low population size
Curr Biol. 2024 Apr 9:S0960-9822(24)00391-9. doi: 10.1016/j.cub.2024.03.051. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLow genomic diversity is generally indicative of small population size and is considered detrimental by decreasing long-term adaptability.1,2,3,4,5,6 Moreover, small population size may promote gene flow with congeners and outbreeding depression.7,8,9,10,11,12,13 Here, we examine the connection between habitat availability, effective population size (Ne), and extinction by generating a 40× nuclear genome from the extinct blue antelope (Hippotragus leucophaeus). Historically endemic to the relatively small Cape Floris...

The oxytocin receptor is essential for the protective effect of pair housing on post-stroke depression in mice
In conclusion, pair housing protects against the development of PSD depending on OXT and OXTR in the brain, with no significant divergence based on sex. These findings provide valuable insights into the potential of social interaction and oxytocin as therapeutic targets for PSD. Further research into the underlying mechanisms of these effects may contribute to the development of novel treatments for PSD.PMID:38614224 | DOI:10.1016/j.exger.2024.112432 (Source: Experimental Gerontology)

Sleep measures and cardiovascular disease in type 2 diabetes mellitus
CONCLUSIONS: Poor sleep quality and higher RDW levels are associated with macrovascular disease in a T2DM population. Increased BMI as well as depression also appear to have an independent role in subclinical atherosclerosis, as assessed by CIMT.PMID:38614653 | DOI:10.7861/clinmed.2022-0442 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Emergency Department Use Among Combat and Non-Combat Post-9/11 Military Veterans
CONCLUSIONS: Those who deployed to a combat zone had a significantly higher rate of ED use compared to those who did not. Further, mental health-related ED diagnoses appeared to be more prevalent in combat Veterans. These findings highlight the unique health care needs faced by combat Veterans and emphasize the importance of tailored interventions and support services for this specific population.PMID:38613450 | DOI:10.1093/milmed/usae155 (Source: Military Medicine)

Serotonin transporter knockdown relieves depression-like behavior and ethanol-induced CPP in mice after chronic social defeat stress
Behav Brain Res. 2024 Apr 13;466:114998. doi: 10.1016/j.bbr.2024.114998. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPatients with stress-triggered major depression disorders (MDD) can often seek comfort or temporary relief through alcohol consumption, as they may turn to it as a means of self-medication or coping with overwhelming emotions. The use of alcohol as a coping mechanism for stressful events can escalate, fostering a cycle where the temporary relief it provides from depression can deepen into alcohol dependence, exacerbating both conditions. Although, the specific mechanisms involved in stress-triggered alcohol dependence and...
