The Prevalence and Patterns of Maltreatment, Childhood Adversity, and Mental Health Disorders in an Australian Out-Of-Home Care Sample
This study aimed to explore key characteristics of the out-of-home care subgroup of a nationally representative Australian sample. To ensure that mental health services are appropriately targeted, it is critical that we understand the differential impacts of childhood experiences for this cohort. Using the Australian Child Maltreatment Study (N = 8503), we explored patterns of childhood maltreatment and adversity of participants who reported ever being placed in out-of-home care, such as foster care or kinship care. In addition, the prevalence of current and lifetime diagnosis of four mental health disorders were explored....

The association of long working hours and short sleep duration on mental health among Japanese physicians
Ind Health. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.2486/indhealth.2023-0174. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis cross-sectional study investigate the association between long working hours, short sleep duration, and mental health among Japanese physicians. We enrolled 232 Japanese physicians. We used the Brief Job Stress Questionnaire to assess high-stress status, and the Japanese version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale to assess depressive status. Daily sleep duration (DSD) and weekly working hours (WWHs) were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. Multivariable-adjusted logistic regression analysis was...

Peripartal COVID-19-Related Restrictions and Psychological Burden - A Quantitative Survey in Austria
CONCLUSIONS: The pandemic-related restrictions led to anxiety, worry, loneliness and an increased risk of depression during the peripartum period. The balance of mental health was negatively affected by measures and restrictions. Even in times of pandemic, more attention needs to be paid to the vulnerable peripartum period.PMID:38631376 | DOI:10.1055/a-2293-2203 (Source: Zeitschrift fur Geburtshilfe und Neonatologie)

Sex-related differences in the clinical presentation of multiple system atrophy
CONCLUSION: The available literature and findings of the present study indicate sex-related differences in the clinical presentation of MSA and its evolution over time, highlighting the importance of considering sex in symptom exploration, therapeutic decision-making, and future clinical trial design.PMID:38630378 | DOI:10.1007/s10286-024-01028-1 (Source: Clin Med Res)

Clinical effectiveness of cardiac rehabilitation and barriers to completion in patients of low socioeconomic status in rural areas: A mixed-methods study
CONCLUSIONS: Cardiac rehabilitation completion was low but effective in reducing mortality/cardiovascular readmissions. Understanding and addressing barriers and needs through mixed methods can help tailor cardiac rehabilitation programmes to vulnerable populations and improve completion and outcomes.PMID:38631370 | DOI:10.1177/02692155241236998 (Source: Clinical Rehabilitation)

Elucidating the influence of familial interactions on geriatric depression: A comprehensive nationwide multi-center investigation leveraging machine learning
CONCLUSION: Prolonging the duration of nocturnal sleep, and elevating the frequency of communication with offspring have been identified as measures conducive to mitigating the onset of geriatric depression.PMID:38631151 | DOI:10.1016/j.actpsy.2024.104274 (Source: Acta Psychologica)

Psychological pain and sociodemographic factors classified suicide attempt and non-suicidal self-injury in adolescents
This study aimed to utilize machine learning to explore the psychological similarities and differences between suicide attempt (SA) and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), with a particular focus on the role of psychological pain. A total of 2385 middle school students were recruited using cluster sampling. The random forest algorithm was used with 25 predictors to develop classification models of SA and NSSI, respectively, and to estimate the importance scores of each predictor. Based on these scores and related theories, shared risk factors (control feature set) and distinct risk factors (distinction feature set) were selec...

Development of an indicator set for the evaluation of the quality of routine ambulatory health care for common disorders in children and adolescents
CONCLUSION: The consented QI set is currently being tested and can subsequently be used (possibly modified) to measure the quality of routine outpatient care for children and adolescents in Germany, in order to indicate the status quo and potential areas for improvement in outpatient care.PMID:38631959 | DOI:10.1016/j.zefq.2024.03.002 (Source: Zeitschrift fur Evidenz, Fortbildung und Qualitat im Gesundheitswesen)

A hematoma in the anterior abdominal muscle in a woman receiving venlafaxine. A literature review of the reports on similar cases
CONCLUSION: Given the cases of either reductions in the platelet count or impairment of platelet activity accompanied by bleeding events, every clinician should be aware of these possible adverse effects when prescribing SNRIs.PMID:38631301 | DOI:10.1159/000538652 (Source: Acta Haematologica)

Partial mGlu < sub > 5 < /sub > receptor NAM, M-5MPEP, induces rapid and sustained antidepressant-like effects in the BDNF-dependent mechanism and enhances (R)-ketamine action in mice
CONCLUSION: Partial mGlu5 receptor NAM, M-5MPEP, induced rapid and sustained antidepressant-like effects in the BDNF-dependent mechanism and enhanced (R)-ketamine action in mice, indicating both substances' convergent mechanisms of action and the possibility of their practical use in treating depression as RAAD.PMID:38632187 | DOI:10.1007/s43440-024-00588-3 (Source: Pharmacological Reports)

Combining Mini-Mental State Examination and Montreal Cognitive Assessment for assessing the clinical efficacy of cholinesterase inhibitors in mild Alzheimer's disease: a pilot study
Aging Clin Exp Res. 2024 Apr 17;36(1):95. doi: 10.1007/s40520-024-02744-4.ABSTRACTCurrent drugs for Alzheimer's Disease (AD), such as cholinesterase inhibitors (ChEIs), exert only symptomatic activity. Different psychometric tools are needed to assess cognitive and non-cognitive dimensions during pharmacological treatment. In this pilot study, we monitored 33 mild-AD patients treated with ChEIs. Specifically, we evaluated the effects of 6 months (Group 1 = 17 patients) and 9 months (Group 2 = 16 patients) of ChEIs administration on cognition with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (...

The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor sertraline alters learning from aversive reinforcements in patients with depression: evidence from a randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSIONS: The study findings indicate a relationship between aversive reinforcement learning mechanisms and aspects of depression, anxiety, and SSRI treatment, but these relationships did not align with the initial hypotheses. Poor task performance limits the interpretability and likely generalizability of the findings, and highlights the critical importance of developing acceptable and reliable tasks for use in clinical studies.FUNDING: This article presents research supported by NIHR Program Grants for Applied Research (RP-PG-0610-10048), the NIHR BRC, and UCL, with additional support from IMPRS COMP2PSYCH (JM, QH) an...
