Link between neurodevelopmental disorders and suicidal risk in children
CONCLUSION: The observed frequency of traits indicative of neurodevelopmental disorders in our population was higher than that observed in the general population, without the presented symptoms being eligible for categorical diagnosis. Considering the dimensional aspects of neurodevelopmental symptoms would therefore enable better identification of children at suicidal risk and more tailored interventions to contribute to the prevention of suicide in children.PMID:38523026 | DOI:10.1016/j.encep.2023.12.002 (Source: L Encephale)

Effects of mindful breathing training combined with diary-based rehabilitation guidance in lung cancer patients undergoing surgery: A randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSION: This study provides evidence that mindful breathing training combined with diary-based rehabilitation guidance can be effective in improving perioperative outcomes in lung cancer patients. It can be applied in clinical practice in the future.PMID:38522328 | DOI:10.1016/j.ctcp.2024.101849 (Source: Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice)

Hypothalamic Gene Expression in a Rat Model of Chronic Unpredictable Mild Stress Treated with Electroacupuncture
Neurochem Res. 2024 Mar 24. doi: 10.1007/s11064-024-04124-w. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDepression is characterized by the loss of pleasure and a depressed mood, and it is a common mental disorder in the twenty-first century. Multiple gene imbalances, which are considered pathological factors in depression, were detected in the brain. Electroacupuncture is an effective therapeutic approach for depression that has minimal side effects. As a crucial structure in the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal, the hypothalamus plays a key role in depression. Our study focused on the transcriptome level in the hypothalamus of depressiv...

MicroRNA-124 influenced depressive symptoms via large-scale brain connectivity in major depressive disorder patients
This study aimed to investigate the neurobiological mechanisms by which microRNA 124 (miR-124) is involved in major depressive disorder (MDD). We enrolled 53 untreated MDD patients and 38 healthy control (HC) subjects who completed behavior assessments and resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) scans. MiR-124 expression levels were detected in the peripheral blood of all participants. We determined that miR-124 levels could influence depressive symptoms via disrupted large-scale intrinsic intra- and internetwork connectivity, including the default mode network (DMN)-DMN, dorsal attention network (DAN)-salience network (SN)...

Early experience with the new DORA daridorexant in patients with insomnia disorder and comorbid mental disturbances: Results of a naturalistic study with 3  months follow-up
J Sleep Res. 2024 Mar 24:e14196. doi: 10.1111/jsr.14196. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInsomnia disorder may affect mental health, increasing suicidal risk. Targeting insomnia is crucial in the clinical practice. Sixty-six consecutive patients with insomnia disorder according with the DSM-5-TR criteria were treated with the dual orexin receptor antagonist, daridorexant 50 mg. Baseline (T0), 1 month (T1) and 3 month (T2) evaluations were performed. Insomnia severity (Insomnia Severity Index), mood, anxiety symptoms and suicidal risk (Beck Depression Inventory-II, Young Mania Rating Scale, Self-Reported Anxiety Scale, Suicid...

Prenatal insomnia disorder may predict concurrent and postpartum psychopathology: A longitudinal study
J Sleep Res. 2024 Mar 24:e14202. doi: 10.1111/jsr.14202. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWhile insomnia symptoms may be a risk factor for mental disturbances, few studies evaluated "Insomnia Disorder" and its relationship with perinatal psychopathology. Pregnant women were recruited during their last routine assessment before being hospitalized for delivery during the 3rd trimester at the Gynaecological Unit of the University Hospital of Ferrara and Udine, Italy, from January 2022 to January 2023. Our assessment included baseline evaluation (T0), and evaluations at 1 month (T1) and 3 months (T2) in the postpartum period, wit...

Stress-induced failure of embodied cognition: A general model
Biosystems. 2024 Mar 22:105193. doi: 10.1016/j.biosystems.2024.105193. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe derive the classic, ubiquitous, but enigmatic Yerkes-Dodson effect of applied stress on real-world performance in a highly natural manner from fundamental assumptions on cognition and its dynamics, as constrained by the asymptotic limit theorems of information and control theories. We greatly extend the basic approach by showing how differences in an underlying probability model can affect the dynamics of decision across a broad range of cognitive enterprise. Most particularly, however, this development may help inform o...

Psychological and Physical Well-Being in Women Diagnosed with Breast Cancer: A Comprehensive Study of Anxiety, Depression, Sleep Quality, Physical Activity, and Sociodemographic Factors
CONCLUSIONS Anxiety, depression, poor quality of sleep, and insufficient PA were common in breast cancer patients. The occurrence of cancer was the main factor causing mental health deterioration in patients with breast cancer. Also, mental state and well-being differed in healthy women compared to breast cancer patients.PMID:38521971 | DOI:10.12659/MSM.943490 (Source: Medical Science Monitor)

The mental health and well-being implications of a mesothelioma diagnosis: A mixed methods study
CONCLUSIONS: Healthcare professionals delivering a mesothelioma diagnosis require regular training in communication skills plus updating in current treatment options, so they provide an appropriate mix of realism and hope. Better signposting to mental health support is needed for patients and carers. Our introduction of posttraumatic growth into the mesothelioma literature is novel. We recommend specialist nurses are trained to recognise, understand, and foster posttraumatic growth.PMID:38522172 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejon.2024.102545 (Source: European Journal of Oncology Nursing)

Using expressive writing to improve cancer caregiver and patient health: A randomized controlled feasibility trial
CONCLUSIONS: Remote EW may be feasible with cancer ICs and improve cancer IC and patient health. However, it can benefit from additional retention strategies and rigorous testing.TRIAL REGISTRATION: CenterWatch Clinical Trials Listing Service (#TX217874); ClinicalTrials.gov (#NCT06123416).PMID:38522170 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejon.2024.102578 (Source: European Journal of Oncology Nursing)

Optimizing indicated cognitive behavioral therapy to prevent child anxiety and depression: A cluster-randomized factorial trial
Behav Res Ther. 2024 Mar 18;176:104520. doi: 10.1016/j.brat.2024.104520. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIdentifying effective components can lead to interventions that are less resource-intensive and better suited for real-world needs. In this 2×2×2 cluster-randomized factorial trial (clinicaltrials.gov NCT04263558), we investigated the effects of three components of an indicated, transdiagnostic CBT intervention for children: 1) Intervention Delivery Format (child group format versus a blended format with group sessions and automated web-based sessions), 2) Parental Involvement in the intervention (group-based versus psy...

Disclosure of sexual abuse by adolescents treated in a psychiatry department
CONCLUSION: This is the first study in France on the reporting of sexual abuse after its disclosure by adolescents being treated in a psychiatry unit. Our results show that child sexual abuse is rarely reported and that health care professionals are far from being the first recipients of these disclosures. We recommend routine screening for sexual abuse in adolescent psychiatry units, improved training for staff receiving these disclosures, and consideration of how best to coordinate medical, social, and legal services for these adolescents.PMID:38523028 | DOI:10.1016/j.encep.2023.12.003 (Source: L Encephale)
