Diversity Essay Ideas Help!
Hi all! I have 2 main ideas for my diversity secondaries and wanted to get opinions on what would be stronger. 1) Both my parents immigrated from Ukraine, I am fluent in the language, my culture is a huge part of my identity. Could talk about this and especially now with the war and political unrest it is more important than ever that I take pride in my roots and educate others on our traditions, values, etc. 2) My brother is Deaf with a cochlear implant. Could talk about my experiences... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

polite, professional way to say deaf?
If I want to refer to a patient who cannot hear and uses sign language in my application, what would be the most appropriate, professional way to do this? Would saying 'deaf' be ok? or perhaps "hard of hearing"? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Low Quality Undergraduate School to T20 Medical School
I'd like to preface by saying I hope this post doesn't come off as gloating or tone-deaf, but this is something I am truly struggling with and so would like any input anyone has to offer. I went to a public state university for undergrad, and I honestly think the quality of education here is not that great. I have felt that a lot of my high school courses were more challenging than my STEM courses in college. That said, I think it has allowed me to "stand out" or at least be one of the... Using the "anything else" essay to talk about hearing loss?
Would it be an appropriate use of the "is there anything else you would like to tell us about your application" to discuss not needing accommodations for a hearing loss or just further expounding on it? Services like real time captioning can cost the school 100k a year, and there has been some protracted battles between some hard-of-hearing students and med schools in the past: National Association of the Deaf - NAD . I don't know if this actually plays any consideration into the... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

WAMC. Will my BB subscore affect my chances?
Hi. This might be a tone-deaf question, but I really wanted to hear other people's thoughts as I can't find clear answers online. I have a 521 mcat, and a 3.98 gpa. I would like to have a good chance to get an interview to top programs like NYU, or UPenn. However, my BB subscore falls below their accepted range on MSAR. I got a (131, 130, 129, 131) subscore. Would those factors prevent me from having a chance to be noticed assuming the rest of my application is good? I am URM, born and... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Evidence-based demonstration of the tone-deaf RadOnc "leadership"
I figured this deserved its own thread. This paper was just published by the intrepid Dr Chowdhary (a person who hopefully continues to be a light in the darkness). I'll just copy and paste his Tweets: [ATTACH type="full"... Evidence-based demonstration of the tone-deaf RadOnc "leadership" (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Diversity Essay - Hearing issue in one ear?
Hi all, I was wondering if this would be too damaging to mention but essentially I have a congenital issue in one of my ears which caused hearing loss on one side (not entirely deaf on one side but close) which is relatively rare. This makes it hard for me to hear if someone is whispering into my ear and to pick out sounds in a crowded room but doesn't affect my work in any meaningful way. I wear a hearing aid if needed for very specific situations and don't list it as a medical issue on... Diversity Essay - Hearing issue in one ear? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Unilateral deafness- should I mention this?
I have unilateral deafness, and this condition has made me interested in medicine. Would it be appropriate to use this in a primary or secondary adversity essay, or is it possible some schools would look down on me for this? I've been told to check with the "technical standards" of schools but they are very vague. This "condition" has not affected my GPA at all, so it's not really an excuse, it's a motivating factor for me. Thanks! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Owning Pets As a Pre-Vet
Hi everybody! I'm an incoming freshman at FSU who is definitely going Pre-Vet. I'm frankly very nervous to jump into the major as most have known that they've wanted to be vets for their entire lives, but it's taken me lots of more time to really think about it and decide. I can't wait to get into the field and help animals. I own a Deaf ferret named Felix (see my profile picture?) but he can't come up with me my first year. I think that I'm going to own a betta fish to have as a little... Owning Pets As a Pre-Vet (Source: Student Doctor Network)
