Abnormal heart rate responses to exercise in non-severe COPD: relationship with pulmonary vascular volume and ventilatory efficiency
Despite being a prognostic predictor, cardiac autonomic dysfunction (AD) has not been well investigated in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We aimed to characterise computed tomography (CT), spiro... (Source: BMC Pulmonary Medicine)

Evaluation of hafnium oxide nanoparticles imaging characteristics as a contrast agent in X-ray computed tomography
AbstractThis research aimed to compare the quantitative imaging attributes of synthesized hafnium oxide nanoparticles (NPs) derived from UiO-66-NH2(Hf) and two gadolinium- and iodine-based clinical contrast agents (CAs) using cylindrical phantom. Aqueous solutions of the studied CAs, containing 2.5, 5, and 10  mg/mL of HfO2NPs, gadolinium, and iodine, were prepared. Constructed within a cylindrical phantom, 15  cc small tubes were filled with CAs. Maintaining constant mAs, the phantom underwent scanning at tube voltage variations from 80 to 140 kVp. The CT numbers were quantified in Hounsfield units (HU), and the contras...

Can predictive factors determine the time to treatment initiation for oral and oropharyngeal cancer? A classification and regression tree analysis
by D ébora Rosana Alves Braga Silva Montagnoli, Vitória Ferreira Leite, Yasmim Silva Godoy, Vitória Marçolla Lafetá, Edmilson Antônio Pereira Junior, Akhilanand Chaurasia, Maria Cássia Ferreira Aguiar, Mauro Henrique Nogueira Guimarães Abreu, Renata Castro Martins This ecological study aimed to identify the factors with the greatest power to discriminate the proportion of oral and oropharyngeal cancer (OOC) records with time to treatment initiation (TTI) within 30 days of diagnosis in Brazilian municipalities. A descriptive analysis was performed on the var iables grouped into five dimensions related to patient ch...

Sensors, Vol. 24, Pages 2568: Modular and Cost-Effective Computed Tomography Design
We present a modular and cost-effective gamma ray computed tomography system for multiphase flow investigations in industrial apparatuses. It mainly comprises a 137Cs isotopic source and an in-house-assembled detector arc, with a total of 16 scintillation detectors, offering a quantum efficiency of approximately 75% and an active area of 10 × 10 mm2 each. The detectors are operated in pulse mode to exclude scattered gamma photons from counting by using a dual-energy discrimination stage. Flexible application of the computed tomography system, i.e., for various object sizes and densities, is provided by an ela...

Comparison of the zonal distribution of calcium salt density and fat marrow in bone-healthy and osteoporotic sacra: an image data analysis using quantitative computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging
ConclusionThe results suggest that in PEO sacral alae experience disproportionate skeletal rarefaction. This concerns the sacral ala at the S1 level ( − 25 ± 55), whereby the calcium salt content is so low that it corresponds to the S3 level of healthy bone (− 20 ± 21 HU). This explains the occurrence of transalar fractures in the load-transmitting zone S1. In PEOFx, the calcium salt density was higher and the fat content was low er on the fractured side than on the intact side, indicating bony compacting due to lateral compression and fat displacement due to hematoma in the accident mechanism. This study ...

A Patient with Diabetes Mellitus and Acute Rhinosinusitis
A 41-year-old with type 1 diabetes had generalized weakness, muffled voice, and slurred speech. Neck computed tomography showed soft-tissue gas in the nasopharynx and prevertebral fascia; examination of sinus mucosal samples identified numerous broad, nonseptate right-angled hyphae and fruiting bodies. What is the diagnosis and what would you do next? (Source: JAMA - Journal of the American Medical Association)

Towards a tailored approach for patients with acute diverticulitis and abscess formation. The DivAbsc2023 multicentre case –control study
ConclusionsNon-operative treatment is generally effective for diverticular abscesses. Tobacco smoking's role as an independent risk factor for treatment failure underscores the need for targeted behavioural interventions in diverticular disease management. IIb Hinchey diverticulitis patients, particularly young smokers, require vigilant monitoring due to increased risks of treatment failure and septic progression. Further research into the efficacy of image-guided percutaneous drainage should involve randomized, multicentre studies focussing on homogeneous patient groups.Graphical abstract (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Nasal Septum Deviation in Patients with Acute Invasive Fungal Rhinosinusitis in a Tertiary Care Hospital: A Cross-Sectional Study
AbstractThis is a retrospective study exploring the demographics and the role of nasal septum deviation in acute invasive fungal rhinosinusitis (AIFS); and if this deviation contributes to the laterality predilection of this opportunistic infection. Fifty-six craniofacial CT scans were evaluated by two radiologists blinded to the clinical data and outcome for laterality of the disease; and nasal septal deviation (NSD). NSD was graded based on the measured septal angle of deviation into mild, moderate, and severe and furtherly classified into one of seven types based on Mladina ’s classification. High prevalence of remark...

Pneumoperitoneum, pneumoretroperitoneum and pneumomediastinum: rare complications of perforation peritonitis: a case report
ConclusionsThis case report highlights the clinical novelty of gas extravasation complications in perforated diverticulitis. The unique triad of pneumoperitoneum, pneumoretroperitoneum, and pneumomediastinum in a 74-year-old female underscores the diagnostic challenges and the importance of advanced imaging techniques. The successful collaboration between radiologists and surgeons facilitated a timely and accurate diagnosis, enabling a minimally invasive surgical approach. This case contributes to the understanding of atypical presentations of diverticulitis and emphasizes the significance of interdisciplinary teamwork in ...

Diagnosis of bone marrow involvement in angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma should be based on both [ < sup > 18 < /sup > F]FDG-PET/CT and bone marrow biopsy findings
CONCLUSION: In AITL patients, PET/BM-positive results may obviate the necessity for repeat BMB to ascertain confirm BM involvement. PET/BM-negative results do not definitively exclude BM involvement. The combined use of [18F]FDG-PET/CT and BMB can increase the diagnostic accuracy of BM involvement for AITL patients.PMID:38626218 | DOI:10.1080/03007995.2024.2337670 (Source: Current Medical Research and Opinion)

Respir Med Case Rep. 2024 Mar 30;49:102017. doi: 10.1016/j.rmcr.2024.102017. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTA 67-year-old male, with a history of severe COVID-19 infection and exposure to talc was seen for worsening shortness of breath for months, requiring supplemental oxygen. He was treated for COVID-19 infection and suspected pneumonia with no improvement. His pulmonary function test (PFT) worsened and computed tomography (CT) showing bilateral airspace opacities with ground-glass opacities (GGO), also worsened over time. He underwent bronchoscopy, bronchoalveolar lavage and pathology revealed pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (...

Preliminary results of the austrian national registry with the novel iCover bridging stentgraft in fenestrated endovascular aortic repair
CONCLUSION: The iCover represents a feasible BSG for fEVAR with an excellent safety profile and technical success rate in the early phase. Prudent post-dilatation and monitoring of the proximal and distal stent ends can potentially further improve outcome.
